for the past 130 years or so my family has farmed in the Souris Valley south of Oxbow. it's excellent country for both whitetail and muleys, i've regularly seen 140+ class deer of both species. my uncle used to regularly count at times over a hundred in the farm yard bedding with the cattle. and back in the 70's the local game club stocked the area with pheasants that have flourished, and the place has never really been hunted. but that game area is closed to anyone who isn't a Saskatchewan resident. any way to find out why this is? it certainly isn't a lack of deer. and the residents season is only open for a week. is there any hope of this changing? i'd love to hunt the family farm.

but i'm not a saskatchewan resident, thats the thing. i know here in manitoba out of province hunters can hunt any where with no guide or outfitter. the area in question is WMZ 31

I know that the Sask. govt. opened up antlerless mule deer in SE Sask. this year. We were going to hunt Gainsborough but got the dates mixed up and missed it by a week. They were offering 2 tags at $15 ea., it's a start. We know lots of farmers in the area and they're just begging for hunters. Maybe some day they'll open it all up.

I wouldn't wonder if it relates to the decision a few years ago to not let "outside" hunters hunt trophy white tail in south Sask. because of fears of Americans buying up and leasing land for their own use. I think in the long run this has been a good thing given what is going on in the forest regions of Sask. Money changes everything and not always for the better. Too bad you guys are getting caught up in it though.

That area was open to Canadian residents up to 5 or 6 years ago when they had a very bad winter kill. The locals always welcomed us and we had a great time there and made some good friends. They closed the non res season and have not opened it up yet. It wouldn't hurt to give SERM a call and ask why, probably just too "busy" to address the issue.

so-is there an area in Saskatchewan where Canadian residents CAN hunt without a guide? If there are -it would be a great opportunity for some enterprising folks or farmers, to have a B&B -I'd be glad for the opportunity to go to a farm and hunt

Ratherbefishing, this is not meant for you personally, just a general rant.

I have a better idea, why don't all of you lobby your provincial game departments to allow all Canadians to hunt without guides or permits in your provinces? I'd like to hunt NFL and BC for moose, the territories for caribou, anywhere for sheep, goats and grizzlies. Guess what? No-can-do, not allowed, get a guide and pay through the nose. But you want to hunt in Saskatchewan? Pardon me if I don't throw you a parade.

Couldnt agree more. As much as I would love to hunt the west, I can only imagine how i would feel if I was a resident there being inundated with non-residents.

Non-Residents (Canadians) can still hunt in Manitoba without a guide but I hear what you're saying Dogleg. My stepson and I were in the Yukon this past fall and couldn't hunt, went to B.C and cost me $150 to shoot 1/2 doz. grouse.

Amen to that !!

You can hunt white tails in Saskatchewan as a Canadian Resident without a guide It's the non-residents (how they refer to foreigners) that need a guide and can only hunt whities, not mulies.

There's plenty of great whitetail hunting area's in Manitoba. Just get away from the city's and the crowds. All kinds of provincial parks and crown lands if you don't know any landowners. Lots of big bucks in the Interlake. thats not too far from you.
