Why can't I hunt with an AR-15?

They are scarey mean and nasty and black. Now if they were happy nice cheerful they would be non-restricted.

Well if thats all thats holding us back :D This must be the only NR AR in Canada! now the question is, do you want to risk being seen in the woods with the Hello Kitty AR?

Is it actually NR? I'd just paint it tan.

Contact the CFO to see what is required for a range. You will likely need to bulldoze up a berm. I think it has to be a certain number of degrees above the horizon depending on what's behind it. The perimeter must be fenced, a flag and flagpole to indicate when the range is hot. Insurance rates I think are around $300 per year per each range on the property. So if you could find a few others to help pay insurance, it wouldn't be so bad. A friend of mine just outside of Rosetown has a certified range on his private property.

You could call Canada Firearms, and have one of the ever so helpful front line phone answerers direct your call to the Saskatchewan CFO. You might have to leave a message or two, but they do get back to you in not bad time. Feel free to PM me and I'll try to help you any way I can.

Thank you so much for the info. that sounds easily doable. Is there a minimum property size regulation? I intend to put a range on my 14.5 acres either way, if it could be made to be certified that would be a bonus. I have neighbors on the south side of my property but none to the north for a mile. To the north there is a 3+ mile gap between houses and nothing in the line of site for 10+ miles but bush. I will be following regs, as far as a berm goes, actually I am hoping to incorporate the berm into a dirt bike track if possible.

Contact your CFO.
Get a copy of the range guidelines.
Building an approved range can be done, but there are hurdles to be cleared.

Welcome to both of you.

An AR 15 is a restricted firearm and can only be discharged at an approved range. That is the law.

Smokechecker, i might suggest you review the rules of CGN in rgards to discussions of illegal activities lest one of the mods censure or ban you. Admitting to commission of criminal acts (yeah, I know...) goes against the pursuit of legal and responsible firearms ownership for which CGN stands.

OOPS:redface: Using my outside voice again..My Bad....Sorry folks!!

Lets not forget that many rifles are disqualified for various hunting because of their low power bullets. Many provinces have simplified it to a minimum bore diameter.

Which making the AR-15 restricted had nothing to do with. There are many AR platform guns other than 223 for larger game such as 308, 450 Bushmaster etc. etc.. The gun was restricted because Kim was a waste of space.

Don't forget the scary factor. cou:

Anyway, good luck seting up a range. I can think of nothing handier for any gun crank.

Thanks, I will set one up, whether I can get it certified remains to be seen.
Either way it will be well used by the neighbors and myself. In the area where I live, the gun to housing ratio must be about 700% LOL R:d:

ah, you beat me to it :D if only a colour change would equal the distance between restricted and non restricted :D

Hi ya'll. I have lived in BC city's all my life and as chance would have it I ended up in rural Sask. I always wanted to shoot and hunt but Vancouver and Kelowna are not what you would call conducive to guns and hunting. Mostly cause I was too busy working trying to pay for a home I could not afford. Anywho I have a few long guns now and am enjoying learning about setting up scopes, hunting varmints at the moment (game season is a bit away) and trying to get 3 rounds sub m.o.a. Its kinda like my golf game, 6 or 9 shots of brilliance, mixed with horrifically long periods of utter brutality. At least here in Sask. I can shoot in my own yard.

As for the title , most city folks, me included, had no idea about the restricted being put on what is a fine concept in hunting rifles.

An AR with a 40 rd mag was my bush gun until the GOVERNMENT made it restricted and I had to surrender it to gun jail for a couple of months to prove it wasnt full auto.
They tried to make it prohibited until the ORA etc. told the GOVERNMENT what they were doing was illegal (BNA ACT, CONSTITUTION ETC. {Queens Medal Competition}) So they made it restricted -

Your "law" is incorrect.

The correct version is

An AR 15 is a restricted firearm and can only be possessed at an approved place. That is the law.

Because we live in Canada and have no rights. The people that make the laws have no knowledge of the laws they pass.

We are basically not responsible enough to carry a gun out and about. On a gun range though it is okay.

Don't want to scare all the sheep in Canadian society with evil looking black machine gun baby killing machines!

Feel free to jump in your car and run down a half a dozen people though, the government thinks your responsible enough for that power, plus the legal system will just slap you on the wrist when you are done.....like the AG of Ontario

The US has been combating the stigma of the "black rifles" for a long time. It took them decades to get the right to own and hunt with the AR platform and now it is one of the most popular hunting platforms in the US of A. The US has had no issues with people hunting with the AR platform either social, ethical or political. People did not start blasting other people with AR's in the woods, crime rates were largely unaffected and the world did not stop turning.

When it comes down to it a AR is identical in purpose to any other firearm that is semi-auto. They hold the same amount and type of ammo, they can have the same 18.5" barrel length, even be the same overall length... and yet the AR has been singled out as a tool to kill people not coyotes/deer/varment and etc.

As long as people walk around with their head up their ass, they will have a hard time hearing common sense.
