Why can't we hunt with handguns?

I'd just like to be able to shoot my pistols out at the farm. Some nice steel targets. I'm sure someday.. way down the road.. shooting paper at a range will bore me.
Some dirt berms. Some steel targets.. oh.. CFO inbound.. sigh..
Probably easier to setup a legal personal range(almost impossible) then get them to allow hunting with pistols(HAH not going to happen).

Though if the population of Canada keeps shifting to the Prairies, we MAY see it as it seems like the Prairies have a different view on firearms then Ontario/Quebec...

Yes, but, the population of the prairies is being swelled by the people from Ontario and Quebec. The very ones that have that different view on firearms. God help us if enough of 'em move here and we get Liberal MP's!

I've been into the handgun scene for quite a while, even prior to the Turdeau and pre-metric era, and I don't recall ever being 'legally' allowed to use them in the field on game. However, I do believe back a ways, trappers could use them to finish off trapped animals.

It was legal in ON into the 70's, believe it or not. It varied from province to province, as do all hunting regs. - dan

Go easy on the regional generalizations. It is more of an urban / rural thing.

As I recall it was the later part of the 70’s that Ontario lost the privilege to hunt with a handgun. Trappers in Ontario still get to use handguns to dispatch animals. The last trapper we had join the club said he did by recommendation of the CFO to carry. I had a hard time believing it but he seemed sincere so I didn’t question it.

And, if I recall correctly, a couple of yahoos entered a bar wearing their handguns on their hips. Kaladar area if memory serves.
Another case of "Pushing The Envelope" until you get a reaction.

There was a thread a while back that had pictures of various members from the 50's up to the 70's deer hunting with handguns. Handgun hunting was stopped when the regs. around ATTs and only being allowed to go to an 'approved range' were brought in. Technically it's still legal, but you'll never get the paperwork.
It was one of the first steps taken to get handguns out of the public eye so that the demonization could start in earnest. If you could still hunt with handguns, the general public would see that there's a legitimate purpose and use for them and would realize handguns aren't just for criminals, and we can't have that, can we?

If I was more gifted technology wise, I'd photoshop a picture of Kirk..."Turdeaaauuu!!!"

I have a book about the cat/wolf bounties on the bc coast & island back in the 20's & 30's and the author talks about using semi-auto handguns specifically for shooting & defense from cats, etc.

So dam true ! Defiantly not decided by people who hunt ! I would love to carry, just for safety sake while carrying my bow in the mountains. I don't think a charging griz or cat will be deterred by my arrow !!! This needs to be readdressed somehow to get us back some freedoms and rights , ! We are supposed to be the country that is strong and free right ! ?? There should be a board made up out of hunters from all provinces to help layout new laws, especially when they effect our safety while we are hunting. I would love to hunt with a handgun, what a challenge that would be!
There is no logic. our "betters" didn't approve and "Presto!": not allowed. My understanding is that Turdeau the Elder is the one responsible.

Because if you had a rabbit in your sights, a handgun bullet would automatically seek out the nearest person and hit them instead. You know, because they were only designed to kill people.

(sarcasm off)

Speaking of rat faced cheese eating poodle walking shirt lifters...it is unconfirmed, but it seems Turdo Jr. is of the same degraded intellect his idiot father was:

I am told that isn't a parody or some weisenheimer making fun...but ya never know... with Liberals comedy and policy go hand in hand.

Pierre Trudeau was not above having another civilian/non LEO carry to protect him. Craig Oliver's book "OLIVER'S TWIST"© Chapter 4 pages 123 and 124 relates an incident on a 1979 canoe trip with PET where PET leapt from his canoe, and trotted toward some grizzlies which then moved away. PET tried to follow.
Oliver relates how he grabbed his "heavy-calibre revolver" and followed after PET to stop him.
The bears had departed and Oliver started to chastise PET but was stopped by PET who asked "how many bullets do you have in that gun?"
When he was told six PET replied "No problem"
There were only five grizzlies.

I find it more confusing that you cannot take your legal owned handgun out and shoot it in the bush while if you owned a .50 heavy rifle you can go ahead and fire that to your hearts content sending bullets out 2km+ but a 9mm shot at 50 meters is illegal for some reason.

Funny you should mention that. As a wee lad back then, I remember reading an article about handgun shooting competitions and some form of cowboy shooting. Not long after that I was walking through our small town with my father when we crossed paths with two men who were openly wearing revolvers on their hips (not police). I stopped and started speaking with them because I immediately associated them with the article I had read.
