Why choose 338 over 300 win mag?

2 reasons I bought a 338 winmag. I already had an '06 and I don't think it gives up a lot to the 300 winmag, and I missed my .375 H&H. I really feel that for all of my hunting needs the 338 wm is tops. $500 got a new Savage from P&D, lightweight and it shoots under a real inch. Misohappy.

I'd love to own and shoot a .338 LM. But like some of the other posters here, I just don't have much opportunity to find a range long enough to practice with something like that.
My .308 is more appropriate for the places I can shoot at, and the practice keeps my head in the right place for any opportunity to shoot bigger bore/magnum rifles owned by family and friends: The hunting's good up there where most of them are in the North...
But, this all being said, I'd love to have a project rifle in .338 LM to tinker on until I get tired of city life. It would be a locker queen until then.

Don't kid yourself, B.C. has some amazingly long distances to be able to shoot. You just have to WANT to find them. That's all part of the thrill of having a gun that can reach out there. I can't wait to have stretched my gun out as far as my shooting range will have let me and then start looking for someting with more distance.

Within 1/2 hour drive of my place I can find a number of places to safely shoot over a mile. Once you start looking for them they start to appear. Of course if you live in the Vancover area you would be looking at a lot more travel time.

I"ve gotta travel an hour to get to where I shoot every time out but it doesn't stop me from making the trip to enjoy the distance. There's something about being out there also that is good for the soul. I personally think it's worth it.
Just my two cents

I built a 338 Edge and love shooting it. Cost wise it isn't that much more because at the distances I'm shooting (800-1200M) I shoot less rounds in a day (going back and forth down range takes some time) than I do with my Savage VLP in .223. The Remington 300 RUM brass is much cheaper than the Lapua ($60.00/50) I also shoot my .223 out to 1000m, but it's not the same as shooting the Edge, but it`s a whole lot cheaper to go gopher shooting with the .223.
For long range rock busting the Edge wins. The other thing with the Edge is that it's a Savage build so If I decide to change calibers to say a .308, I just give Jerry a call and order another prefit barrel, bolt head, and thread her on and go!
