Why do I need convincing to buy a handgun?

Hey gang....
I've been wanting to buy a handgun for the past 3-5 years.....still havent made the plunge but the prices on the S&W M+P are pretty hard to resist. I'm at the point where I cant seem to convince myself that I NEED to spend $600 on a gun that I can only shoot at the range. I own all hunting firearms and enjoy shooting a pile, but not sure that I'll take full advantage of owning a handgun.
Anyone face similar decisions when buying their first? I think possibly if there were enough shoots that I could start competing or doing something in a league of some sort that I would shoot enough. I live about 20 minutes from a good range in Lethbridge....
What do I need to do to convince myself that I need a handgun enough to go out and spend my Christmas money on one?? What kind of competitive shooting events are there around? Man I hate spending money.....

I was like you Rack, I've been shooting practically all my life, but only with hunting rifles and shotguns. I bought my first handgun the day that Paul Martin announced he was going to ban all handguns during the last election. #### off you Liberal Prick.

I don't shoot IPSC or anything like that yet, but I plan on getting involved sometime in the next year or two. I find owning a handgun gives me another opportunity to enjoy shooting. Consider buying one just for the simple joy of shooting... handguns are a lot of fun.

You don't need any convincing: handguns are fun as hell... just buy one and get it over with, you ninny! ;)

Haha....yep that about sums it up.....I probably should just go out and buy one and shoot the heck out of it.....

Sometimes you just gotta type it out or say it to yourself to beleive it.....

It's not such a big deal. If you don't like shooting handguns you can always sell it later.
Chances are you will like it and get more restricted gear.

Iwouldn't get a norinco but would save up a bit more and get a glock 17... alot of great deals on those

I wouldn't.

I'd get an STI Spartan. Super accurate, well equipped, and a lot easier to shoot well than a Toy's 'R' Us special.

The reason you have not bought a handgun yet is because you are too Canadian. As a true Canadian you don't believe you should have fun. :p Go buy the gun now!

I shoot my plastic Glock better than anything I've had yet except my BHP. Thousands of police depend on them as well.

There is no perfect handgun just the one you want!:D

As Rudy H says. as a Canadian you have been made to feel you must NEED a handgun or you shouldn't have one.

I would suggest that you might think you need one when someone invades your home and threatens your family. And please don't say, "That will never happen to me."

I'm only being flippant. I have an M&P which I like. It's just as accurate as a lot of other handguns, but not as easy to shoot accurately, as you confirm with your BHP. (Incidently, a firearm I don't care for very much). Cops have a very distinct criteria for a handgun, not necessarily the same as yours or mine.

There is no perfect handgun just the one you want

With this I agree 100%. Who cares if you can't hit a barn from the inside, if YOU enjoy it that is all that matters.

And Racmastr, after you have tasted the 'forbidden fruit' you will be hooked. Run, don't walk, to your local gunshop and buy that Smith !

Easy there Rudy, I'm a Canadian and I might take offense to that.

The reason you have not bought a handgun yet is because you are too Lieberal. As a true Lieberal you don't believe you should have fun. :p Go buy the gun now!

There, fixed it for you :p :D .

Rackmastr, I wish I had you determination. I actually have to convince myself that I don't need to buy _________ .

What kind of competitive shooting events are there around? IPSC, PPC, action league in the summer at Lethbridge (quasi IPSC'ish shooting) Man I hate spending money.....Pardon??? :runaway:

Start somewhere!

Just by saying you've been thinking about it for the last 3-5 years, means that there is some genuine interest and you do enjoy shooting. Spend the money and buy ONE gun, it's just a drop in the bucket compared to your hunting collection. You may not love it, or you may just like it, but I'm sure you won't hate it. Pistol shooting is a great past time, whether it's plinking or competition and you will meet some real nice people, that are also very knowledgable and helpful. Come on board, the worst that will happen is that you'll sell that beautiful S&W M&P and make back a good portion of your money.

Find something used here in EE. Buy it, shoot it and if you don't think it's worth the bucks spent, sell it for about what you put out for it.

It is not just about handguns.
It is all about fullfill your childhood's dream to have a gun.
It is all about your right to own one before they ban the handgun.
It is all about meeting new friends at the range, exchange experience, try their guns, chating and learn from each other.
The benifit is way more than we spent on guns, ammo and club fee.
Come and join us brother.

Here is what I would do , look up UMAREX on Youtube , Airgun reviews etc.
I have the Beretta, and 1911 A1 Colt, and they are a blast, a good pellet trap , and you can learn more in one month from holding, to squeezing the trigger , etc... than years at the range. And save money ...
Some say , no recoil, get to that later.
My 2 cents... :50cal:

I could think of a few excuse to buy a handgun...

- Plink away at paper target
- Discover a new discipline
- Join a bulleye league
- Join a PPC league
- Join a cowboy action shooting league
- Join an IPSC league
- ...
- Meet a new crowd of shooters :D

But at the very least, everyone should buy at least ONE handgun (semi-auto even better) to piss off the Liberals

Mike.

You DESERVE it! They are fun. The Lethbridge range is an excellent range. I will warn you that they are addictive. Very few people only own a handgun or two. Most own many. Taber also has a good indoor club that shoots in the winter. I think there is a club in the pass as well. Which direction from Lethbridge are you? We may be able to meet on a weekend and shoot a bit. Once you have shot a few different guns it should make the decision easier to make.
