Why do I think I want a 7mm-08?

Supercub you make it sound like its impossible to get ammo for the 7mm-08, I know not every country store that sells ammo will have it but there aren't that many country stores around this province that sell ammo. Besides I handload. A 7mm-08 is definitely going to be joining my locker soon.
Nope ...... All I said is that it's easier to find 308 than the other. As a handloader this makes no diff to you whatsoever so a 7/08 is a perfect choice.

I reload too, but ammo for 7mm-08 can be had in most places... CT and Walmart both carry it here in town.
That would not be the case here in NB. You can buy 7/08 here in SJ but CT and Walmart pretty much stick to the bare bone basics here as that's what most folk here shoot. I only know one guy here that I work with that shoots a 7/08 and he handloads too. Every one else shoots a 308/30-30/3006/303/270.

I don't see that you could go wrong with the 7mm-08 for what you are describing. Fixed power scopes have limited selection - what are you thinking of? My hunting in NB has all been pretty up close stuff so the 2.5x power might be a good choice.

i have a mod 7 (youth)compact in 7-08,its perfect for walking or in a treestand its so light and maneuverable.its the gun my wife uses for deer also.i highly recommend the compact mod.

Ideally it will be wearing a 2.5 or 4x, although I may break down and get a 1.5-4.5 or 2-7 compact as it seems very few local retailers carry fixed power scopes.
And yes pictures will be supplied as soon as I decide what make and model to get.

You are not wrong. When I started out I told myself I was going to be a very frugal man living a simple life, owning a .22 rimfire, a 12 gauge shotgun, and an Enfield No.4 to do for all my hunting and shooting. I am sure I am not the first to think like that and I admire the self-restraint of anyone who has held to it, but there are too many nice guns and interesting guns not to try some of the variety. If that 7mm-08 isn't for keeps, it will at least have given you a better appreciation for your .30-06 and your .32 and if you don't pay over the odds you'll sell it for most of your purchase price.

The next rifle for my son will be 7-08. For all the virtues that people are extolling here. Great ballistics, sufficient downrange energy, low recoil, abundance of bullet selection for reloading. I started him on 6mm Remington at 8 years old. I would feel more comfortable with a heavier bullet when he graduates to hunting elk, moose and bear.
