why do Norinco's have such a bad rep?

Might be awhile. Norinco 1911's were being used by the Philippine Army not all that long ago. Compare a Springfield/Colt GI model with a Norinco at half the price and tell us where the added value is. I have heard of early M305's receivers being a problem but not recent versions. The one I gave to my son has never missed a beat. The only mod I did was to replace the rear sight with a GI sight from a Garand. I have seen him put five rounds inside a 6 inch circle standing at 100 yards. Not bad for what then was a $400 military rifle with iron sights.

I think the bad rep comes from misaligned expectation on the user side. User expectations are higher than what Norinco delivers. User wouldn't admit to it and blames the product.

Tough to take you seriously when you can't spell or get the facts straight. The B29 that dropped one of the two atomic bombs on Japan was the "Enola ###" which dropped "Little boy" on Hiroshima followed by "Bockscar" dropping "fat man" on Nagasaki.

The Philippine Army is not exactly the pinnacle of cutting edge. They buy what's cheap not what's great. There's also no way to tell if the contract guns come from the same line as the commercial guns. What you get with a USGI gun is piece of mind that it was built properly and that warranty is available.

Paying more is related to quality but only to a certain point, after which you are paying for name.
 
I have to make some comments/corrections here. The Philippine Army did not buy Norincos. They have some small arms donated by the Chinese and Russian govts in the last 2 years. As far as I know, most pistols to govt forces has the 1911 as a std platform. Purchased from US manufacturers including US Surplus inventories and from local manufacturers like Armscor. They also have some Beretta 92s and some polymers like Glock 17 and Tanfoglio MAPP including Taurus 1911s and the Beretta clones. Though Norincos has been in the Philippine market for at least 25 yrs now, they are not as popular as the US and locally built 1911s. They are still cheaper and a good base gun for an aspiring newbie. And the primary market for Norinco pistols has been the Security business because of the cost. As for assault rifles, AR platform is the standard issue to govt forces. They still use M1 Garands for the govt. controlled militia. M14 is also in use primarily by snipers but newer and modern sniper rifles is now a standard issue with special Forces. MP5s for SWAT and other LE units. I would rate Norinco as an acceptable line for the price. Not a great brand, but it works. As all of us know here, "You get what you pay for."

Norinco is about making money first, quality or safety has never been their strong suit. Why else would they switch to MIM bolts in the 305s? They obviously don't care about consumer safety. How do you know they are not going to pull the same crap with their 1911s? Only time will tell I guess.

Many other gun companies like Colt, Glock, Kimber, Walther etc. etc. have been using a MIM technology for years. A properly manufactured MIM part is as good as a machined part. I've not heard about dramatic increase in catastrophic or fatigue failures of the Norinco 305's bolts or any other Norinco parts for that matter. Have you?
 
I love budget pistols and norinco is at the top of the list. Never had a problem with one yet after 1000's of rounds. I still have a 1911 .45, a .22 woodsman clone, and1911 in 9mm. Norinco allows people to get in the shooting game who otherwise not be able to afford it. I don't know a single owner who can say they are not worth every cent of their affordable price tags. And to people who say they don't want to support Communist China, well that's just ridiculous... you support them more everytime you go to Walmart.
