Why do we start to Hate some calibers?

I don’t own a .243 figured I had that area covered with 257 rob and 25/06.

I got rid of all of my .25 cal rifles... sold the last Robert's a month ago... too big for coyotes and prefer 6.5's and up for deer and larger. I had the last Robert's set up for wolves, but I rarely get out for wolves any more and the .243/6mm rifles can do just as well when needed.

I wouldn't sell my 257 for a 243, but then the same could be said the other way around.

I used to despise 30-06. At the time I wanted only unique calibers nobody heard of. 30-06 was far too common for the likes of me.

Fast forward to what I call my “efficiency” era of firearm ownership. I went with the 30-06 as my primary long rifle cartridge as it checked all my boxes.

-Available everywhere
-accuracy potential
-decent long range capability
-ability to handle up-to 200gr bullets effectively
-decent shorter barrel performance (under 20” i’ll go with 308)
-barrel life longevity
-did is forget to mention that it’s available everywhere!!!

I feel the same way. I like to check the same boxes.

I don't think I can say that I despise any one cartridge.
I am fond of the 308 Winchester. There are a few thing I do like about it. 1) its common 2) bullet availability (benefit of #1) 3) many rifles available (also benefit of #1) 4) good performance with a short barrel.
Most of all, it gives me a feeling of confidence when I'm hunting and that feels good.
I currently own a 243. I really like it. I mostly target shoot so its fine. I did take it out deer hunting this year and discovered that it did not provide the level of confidence I like when hunting. I'm certain it would work just fine. It just didn't FEEL right. I may get another 308 one day....

3006 is too newfie for me, so I'll never own one.

My current go to is a 300wsm, might build a second one.

Given that folk from the rock are some of the nicest people you are ever going to meet, that comment makes no sense to me...

Don't hate it but must say I have a strong dis-like for the 8mm Remington Mag.
It falls between a 300 and a 338 and improves on neither other than muzzle blast, recoil and just being a PITA to find brass and bullets for.
Done right though it is one hell of an elk slammer.

What's wrong with the venerable '06. I've hunted world wide with one and have taken 12 trophies with 1 shot kills in Africa. Easy to find ammo and to reload, tons of bullet combos available and as far as the critters are concerned, DEAD is DEAD. Don't need to chase some new fad cartridge just to BS with the boys about something new or about some new plasticy new rifle they have bought or dream about. Give me a nice walnut and blued steel '06 and stay out of the way.

It's a combination of things.

1- Everything I bought is the best

2- Curmudgeons who don't like change

3- Virtue signalling of some Goler warped way

4- Toxic masculinity (just to keep the LGBTQP crowd in the mix)

5- My Dad/Grandfather are old fools

6- A few guys actually know what they're talking about.

7- Just another screwdriver in the drawer

There is nothing wrong with the 30-06, it's a good cartridge and a decent choice for an "all around hunting cartridge." I've owned a few but the only one I have left is my Dads old hunting rifle, and no desire to ever own a 30-06 again unless I decide to buy another M1 Garand.
