As I sit here waiting for the snow to melt and spring to settle in,it got me thinking. Maybe it's just cabin fever kicking in after a long cold winter, but I started thinking about what I liked most about bear hunting. I usually run anywhere from 2 to 6 baits every spring. I haven't personally shot a bear in a few years although I see lots. Then it just kind of occured to me that I just enjoy being out in the woods. What are other peoples reasons for huntin' Bar?

- meat
-hide
-trophy skull
-other

I'd run this post as a poll but I'm not sure how so let's just run it as an opinion post.

I don't hunt them but if I did the main reason would be to stop them from breaking into the cabin, which is a big problem.

I just love being out in the spring, on a warm sunny afternoon. Calm, no wind, walking through newly grown cover and dandelions looking for game, shed antlers and what have-you, stretching the legs after a long winter. These conditions are also ideal for bear hunting, spot and stalk or walk and find. For me it is my favorite time of year and favorite way to hunt.

Me too. I like the taste of bear meat but most years i have so much fun baiting and watching bears that I never seem to get around to harvesting one.

So what does bear taste like?
I have no freezer, so big game is out for me at the moment.

I find bear meat is a slightly sweet and since they're rtelated to the pig family I find the meat has a similar texture. Fall bear is usually very greasy so I prefer spring bear, but others like fall bear better especially if they've been feeding heavily on grain or berries.

I greatly desired the fur of the first bear I shot. I ate it all too, but didn't enjoy the meat much since it was a very lean spring bear. I would like to shoot another specifically for meat, later in spring or in fall and make a bunch of sausage.

Because I can.

Actually the closest relatives of bears is the dog family and even that is a long stretch. About the only thing bears and pigs have in common is that they are both mammals.

And for the OP ....... I hunt bears so that I can hunt in the spring. I very seldom shoot bears anymore but I still like to get out hunting them if that makes sense.

Funny, I hear many people don't like the meat so you did really well to eat all the fur.

But seriously, while I don't hunt bears yet, I probably will eventually because I'd love to have a rug made of a bear I'd killed myself and I'd like to try eating bear.

For the joy of hunting and meat ofcourse. I shot my first bear a few years ago and let some friends and family try it. Now I get requests for bear meat each year. No complaints here, happy to provide friends and family with good wild meat.

I haven't for a few years now and didn't take anything the last three seasons...
In the beginning it was bone mass and square footage...
then it became an excuse to be part of natures reawakening...
nothing like a forest in spring!

They are a target of opportunity for me.

The buggers seem to like my barley that is supposed to be there for the deers. :p

Although, most days they are quite fun to watch.
