Yup, once that behavior has been established there's no fixing it short of gun fire. A couple of years ago we came upon a cabin that had been raided by a polar bear. The indoor light was on and the stereo was going and there was a large pile of bear crap near the door. I had this vision of that bear bumping the light switch in the dark of night, turning on the light and the music and being so startled that he voided and bolted out the door which was designed to swing in not out. I have to admit I giggled, but then it wasn't my cabin. That bear made a nuisance of itself for a few weeks, until it tried to get into my pal's place while he was home. It seems that Mr Holland's .375 works on bears.

When I was younger, I did a fair bit of black bear huniting. Over those years, several experiences occured that gradually changed my mind about hunting them..........

First, I noted that when they were skinned, the carcass had an erie human like quality it. Later, while hunting in northern MB, a native elder I encountered ( I think he was Cree ) told me that to many First Nations people they were the re-incarnated spirit of a person. That combined with what I just mentioned after skinning, made me think. Also a little too dog like for a dog lover like myself.

The rugs were gorgeous, but a bit of a waste when I could not seem to come up with a decent recipe for the meat that I liked. In fairness, I have eaten bear prepared well on one occassion and enjoyed it, just could never duplicate it.

So in the end, it came down to the adventure and experience for me. I chose to keep hunting other big game and from then forward, whether or not I came home with anything it did no matter in the least. I was out enjoying the Canadian wilderness, and that was all I ever really needed.

On the other hand, the hunter in me will still possibly pick up a tag when they are in season with other big game in the fall, just in case that record black or ultra rare color mutant were to cross my path. Not being able to take that shot in a situation like that may haunt me for a good looooonnngg while.:D

Great topic for discussion.....

I never hunted bear, but if I did, it would be firstly because of the meat! In my opinion I think that bear meat tastes better than moose and deer. I've had goulash and other dishes with mixed wild meat and bear was much more tasty and had better texture than the rest.

Secondly there is just something about hunting a predator, which gives a rush and fulfillment. Maybe it's a guy thing, but it feels more of an accomplishment than killing a herbivore. And also of course thirdly.. you want to trophy it so having it's skull or hide laid and stretched out beside a cottage bed or something is kickass. This is how I see the animal being put to 110% use :)

I've gotten a set of tags for the soon to be spring season in Newfoundland. (we're allowed two here per license). I've attempted to hunt them before, but never got too serious about it. From now on I'm gonna put more of an efford to try and take a few each year, between both spring and fall seasons. (try and help out our declining caribou population a little).

I hunt them for "the hunt" I guess, besides the reason stated above. Also, Bear skulls and mounts are neat treasures.
