Why does everyone give the axis a hard time?

Funny I have owned 3 including 1 that was technically a Savage Edge, a 270 a 243 and a 223. I still own the 223 it used to ride under the back seat of my work truck, not sure how my new employer would react to me carrying it

Sold the 270 to a co-worker as a favour as he was desperate for a deer rifle and the wife was not happy spending money

Gave the 243 to my brother, I needed room in the gun safe and his son had one in a youth model

The 223 is still getting knocked around by me

All of them are still factory bog standard with original scopes and not a malfunction among them, still don't know where all the guff about the scopes comes from, and yes I own many different scopes from many different price points

I have one in 7mm-08, every shot I take the magazine pops out enough so I can't chamber another round without pushing the mag back in. Also the trigger is quite heavy.

funny, I don't care for a savage axis either, BUT back in the day, in 1962 most gun writers said the same about the Remington 700, now I am not saying the axis will be a rifle that gunnutz will praise in 50 years either

Axis is like a gm cavalier entry level stuff with some problems but they sell a ton of them... I have no problem with that... I just dont need one in the safe... JP.

Curious as to why everyone gives the savage axis a hard time? I have one in .308 and for being a 400$ rifle I love the little thing. It is cheap feeling in the hands with that cheap plastic stock but performance wise it shoots better then most other more expensive rifles out of the box. After a few little diy jobs on them they can be a great little rifle.

I find them terribly expensive. I have been waiting years to find a "good" used one on EE for half price. I was fortunate and found one. I unscrewed the barrel, and voala, a very accurate fish bonker..........the rest of the gun went in the garbage.

The axis does not shoot better than any other modern rifle; no offence but I get the feeling you haven't shot the competition if you feel this way.

Aesthetically and "fit" wise it is an abomination.

I'm not anti budget rifle; I am a well known supporter of the T3 against its legions of haters.

I haven't had time to read this entire thread so this may be a redundant comment, but a T3 is priced at 250% the going rate for an Axis. Not a great comparison lol.

I have one in 223 stainless and love it , all research and reviews will inform anyone who cares that these rifles perform way above their price tag
and i would concur i have seen no reason to pay more what i aim at i hit.
I am currently looking for a 308 model to reach out farther .
In the end everyone will have an opinion and that fine \
But these rifles have a industry of reviews backing that it is just plain simple bang for the buck out of the box accuracy
just dont expect bling and bells and whistles ,,its meat and potatoes
which taste fine to me

A year later, and the axis is still an adequate hunting rifle for most with some serious misgivings.

Sometimes one just has to agree with a fellow CGNer's comment in a fully committed fashion (no matter how 'necro' the thread is). My axis (an Edge actually) was either going in the garden as a tomato stake or to be sold on the EE (5 years ago). Rather than insult my tomato plants I sold the rifle. Still feeling a tad sheepish about actually selling the thing rather than re-purposing it.

The worst gun is the one in your hands that goes click when it should go bang when you have done your due diligence to prepare for your hunt.....

Got mine on sale at Wholesale for $ 285!!!! as it was the display model and had some handling marks as expected.

It is what it is, an very inexpensive basic rifle but it performs provided I do my part and respect what it is.

The trigger is basic, the bolt has slop and the factory stock flexes easily but I'm only shooting a .223 model and I've figured it all out.

Accuracy is spot on and only changes to the rifle is a coat of Krylon OD paint, bipod and tossed a Redfield Revolution 3-9x on it and mounted the included Bushnell onto an SKS.

Only problems I've ever had were all user induced and that was only caused by short stroking the bolt.

It's a great simple rifle for new shooters to get acquainted with without a lot of recoil, shoots like a laser and hits exactly where I point it every time.

I found extra mags for $26 each and dove on them, I see them listed for $65+ in stores nowadays.

The plastic retention clip on the magazine is not something I like at all but hasn't been a problem so far.


Not a rifle I ever intend on selling as for a fun accurate affordable shooter it fits the bill perfect.y!!

Due diligence including test firing, how many axis rifles fire sporadically? Has anyone here actually had that happen?

Axis are known for light primer strikes........ read up and you will see that they will cover this under warranty, which is cool, but doesn't help the guy that has no usable rifle while he is awaiting parts.........

IMOP, the deal breaker for me is the mag catch....... super vulnerable to turn your rifle into a single shot in a heartbeat....

On the farm an axis is the perfect choice. It gets left laying around and treated with a fair bit of neglect (something you wouldn't do with a nice rifle). Its my pest control and has always done the job very well even after bouncing around in a truck or tractor. Its a cost effective tool that if it saves one calf from dogs/yotes, It owes me nothing.
Embarrassed to admit it, But I left one 223 axis leaning against a rear tractor tire and forgot about it. Never tried it, but you could shoot around corners with it now. No big Loss!!!!!

My buddy is taking buck second year in a row with this crappola. Bad dancer is blaming his balls. Rifle should be a kiss system. Simple and stupid! Have a deer in sight- shoot, fell through ice in water- paddle, red stupid comments- crushed the skull! I twisted it pretty good. Lol. BTW t3 is my fav

Cause they the worst flexible cheap stocks out there and I absolutely hate flexible stocks. And I really dislike triggers tat need 3 men a boy and a ox to pull.
