Why don't IPSC shooters like 3-gun?

3 times the cost keeps a lot of IPSC shooters out of 3-gun. Also, I can't think off hand of a sport that you don't know what to expect when entering the venue. Maybe I'm missing something.

There is no one reason in general. Perhaps one reason for one person. Or multiple reasons. Same reasons that a lot of guys don't cross platforms. Money...time...equipment...like or dislike...preference.
We should not be bashing another discipline. They are all firearm sports. Trap, skeet, silhouette, precision, 3 gun, IPSC, IDPA (and many more). We should be supporting and enhancing each other so we can continue to enjoy to be able to choose which sport(s) we would like to participate in.

3 gun is something fun to shoot. But try to get competitive with it. We are talking about lots of time and money.
Some just want to shoot all the guns. That is okay.
Some want to be really good and make GM or champion, that is good too.

I am focus on IPSC.

less matches, considering its canada where only 5 months for outdoor shooting, its hard to justify spending 10K . as for me, will try to shoot 3 gun, shotgun and rifle matches in the summer and reserved the pistol for winter indoor.

$10k? Crap son, my $900 G34, $800 M3K and $800 AR don't come close to $10k. You don't need a Taran shotgun, Cobalt AR and a STI 3Gun to participate.

The guns/ammo costs are insignificant compared to travel costs.
Entry fees have been steadily creeping skyward over the past few years for many of the major matches... Factor in the lower value of our dollar and the fee for this year's BRM3G was well north of $400.

He’s probably talking about the combined cost of guns, ammo, traveling/ accommodations expense and entry fees, IF you hit every big event between BC and the East Coast.

Yeah thats true. I forgot about travel costs. even going 5 hours away for an event can add up.

I shoot IPSC and and quite enjoy 3gun. The ones who hate it must be the same IPSC members who wear Soloman Speedcrosses to indoor ranges.

Says the guy in the tilley hat :) (since we are generalizing). All kidding aside, I think it comes down to lack of time to do both sports combined with some regions hardly having any type of multigun frequency. Also more ammo and guns to travel and set up. I personally have loved shooting the few matches I have tried but can not imagine traveling with all that gear around the country and into the states. IPSC keeps me busy enough.

For the record...the only sneaker/running shoe I wear are the speed crosses. I just have not found a more comfortable ALL purpose shoe. The spike crosses get a little loud in the hotel lobbies though if you can relate.

10k isn’t that far off once you add in a decent supply of ammo and opt for mid tier firearms

Major matches can easily have fees in the $250-$400 range

Good, high quality gear is always an advantage. If you have good gear, you will use it.
But budget is a huge factor in this sport for many, but heck, consider the duffers on the fairway that use crappy tire clubs and irons that always manage to hand my butt to me when I play golf?!
Use and play what you have and acquire and update when you can. In the interim, get out there, be safe, and shoot!

I'm planning to get fully immersed in 3-gun next year. With my ddm4v7 pro, shadow 2, and soon to be purchased TacOrd remington versa max, I'm nowhere near to 10k, even factorying in my Dillon 650 with case feeder with accessories to load 9mm and 233 I'm still $2000 ish away.
I've only shot one 3 gun match this year and I paid $50 for it. I think I've heard a few gunners talking about going to some big event that would cost that much, but I wouldn't go, at least not any time soon. 3 gun to me is more fun, but the afterwards "hang over" is much harder to handle than IPSC. I try to attend each and every IPSC match in the area because there will always be a good number of competitors in one match. 3 gun, I presume not so much as it's not help as frequent nor is it as popular as IPSC.

Salmon, I'm not sure we've met. If you need a contact in both realms, send me a PM and I can try to keep you in the loop on all the 3gun and IPSC happenings here in SK.

I don't think we have. The only 3 gun match that I've shot was in a range close to Calgary (I don't remember what the range is named) and I was brought there as a guest shooter. I've been trying to have my BB course with Cliff, so I can start practicing and shooting IPSC. But for some reason, I was not notified when he held the course, twice. I sent you a PM and hope to get some great tips from you.

Time and $$.....its that simple

$$ in the weapons/ammo and gear particularly if one is already shooting another discipline.

Not many of us can pony up that kind of disposable $$ or the time required to care/feed/practice/clean/maintain 3 gun equipment.

I actually possess enough guns/gear to shoot 3 gun...just cannot afford the time or $$ to do it...I've tried it.....it is a TON o FUN and very challenging....perhaps when I retire...if I'm still up for it physically/financially.

I actually improvise 3 gun shooting often when plinking at the range...and not just with cutting edge military or gamy guns....I like to set up and do drills with my more "run of the mill" guns as well....just for fun and proficiency. It will likely be these guns that see the elephant if/when things go south than the high end tactical weaponry for a lot of us.

Also I think a lot are intimidated by 3 gun...and poss for good reason. Not saying none should attempt or engage in it but it needs to be taken uber seriously.
To be safe and proficient with 3 different firearm platforms...particularly transitioning .....requires considerable skill and confidence which requires a lot of practice/discipline to build the required muscle memory/habits and programming.
This requires serious commitment of ones time/$$ and efforts. A lot of professionals work very hard at it to be safe and get it right.... even when it is a full time professional approach.
Nobody wants to be embarrassed/fail or worse yet...make dangerous mistakes.
