Why don't IPSC shooters like 3-gun?

before reading these posts my attitude was "well, another thing to try out"......after all the "smart" and snobby replies - if all the 3G people like that, - I will better stay with the IPSC crowd.......

well well well....now - for sure....

"...Soloman...." - they cannot even spell the word correctly.....BTW, I have a pair.....

Me too. They are awesome. I had another pair of trail running shoes with some serious tread to them...the Speedcross put them to shame. Glad I read this thread before wearing them to an indoor range! That would have been embarassing, apparently. :D

I shoot both IPSC and 3 Gun, and IPSC rifle and shotgun matches when I can. And several of my IPSC friends that have even more time and ‘understanding’ or no wives, shoot both as well as CQB, Service / Precision Rifle, etc.

IMHO:
Action shooting sports are expensive and Suspect the majority of IPSC shooters feel they don’t have the nessary equipment to compete in 3 Gun.

Also in my area some of the 3 Gun matches, especially the smaller club level matches, are not well ‘advertised’. Versus IPSC matches which are relatively plentiful, well advertised and super easy to sign up for.

Finally, take a look at just how many IPSC matches the average IPSC competitor shoots each year. Think you’ll find that the majority of IPSC competitors don’t actually shoot that many matches. In my experience it’s usually the same 25% of our IPSC membership that seem to shoot the majority of matches. With the other 75% only shooting the occasional match. So not really as large an IPSC base to draw 3 Gun competitors from IMO.

Shoot all the gun games, just none very well, need to practice on one to get better. The price to get into Cowboy action with the good stuff is around 7000 dollars. How about 3 gun and are there match's more then one a year?

If the stages were just one gun per stage do you think that would make it more appealing for you?

I think there's a lot of people who would find that format much more appealing.

Six stage match. Two stages for each gun.

I think it would be a lot less intimidating for many people.
The thought of having to use all three guns at once (and carry so much gear) probably scares some people away.

Also; Handgun pros would still get the scores they deserve on the pistol stages, regardless of how slowly they load their shotgun.

Out of the fear of developing a flinch going back and forth between platforms thus affecting the proficiency of their chosen method of competition shooting... although no one would dare admit such.

I shoot both disciplines and above ‘3 Gun’ scenario would not appeal to me... as much as a ‘real’ 3 Gun Match.

I like 3 Gun because you need to have the ability to transition from rifle to shotgun to pistol in the same stage. That’s the whole point of 3 Gun!

If you want to shoot pistol/shotgun/rifle in separate stages you can just stick to IPSC. IPSC has what they refer to as 2 or 3 Gun matches sorta like this. You shoot a 3 stage pistol match. Followed by a 3 stage shotgun or rifle match. Each is a separate match but they will ‘unofficially’ combine the separate match scores for an overall 2 or 3 Gun winner.

These matches are fun and I will take part when available but they are NOT true 3 Gun matches!

PS. 30 minutes on YouTube, box of Brownells dummy rounds and 1 hour of practice and most guys/gals will be fairly proficient in duece shotgun loading. And another 15 minutes and you’ll be quad loading like a champ. Not rocket science guys:)

It's been my experience that most 3 gun matches are put on by people who don't shoot anything organized like IPSC and as a result the rules are usually way out there. I much prefer 3 gun matches that follow a standard set of rules such as USPSA muti-gun. 3 gun matches are more about running around for the sake of running around don't interest me. I like balance and I like a shooting challenge not a marathon.

Oh come on now. They are both action shooting sports with similar formats...probably at the same range with a lot of the same people. Yes of course people can enjoy different things. I'm asking to find out specifically what they don't like about 3 gun, or why they don't want to try it in the first place.

Y'want my blunt take on it.. ?

Fear.

A lot of guys have big egos attached to their primary game. Stepping out of their comfort zone at the risk of performing less than stellar is something some personalities can't deal with.
Then you need to define what you mean by "3gun"... There are a few flavours as far as i can tell.
I just returned from my 8th Blue Ridge Mountain 3Gun match... 9 stages over three days all shot in natural terrain where the stages are so long the RO has to chase you in a glof cart... Now that's my kind of 3gun.

A couplr ofvids from this years match posted by some other shooters..

Handgun targets from point blank to rifle steel out to 400 yards and all sorts of shotgun all in one stage. What's not to love?
Would I drive 30 min to shoot a zombie match where 90% of the participants are doll'd up like they looted the local army surplus store...? Probably not.

ETA... Another thing that might keep some people away from 3gun is the shear amount of gear you have to haul... It's far easier to grab your ONE range bag and head out to your local IPSC match than it is to load up a pickup truck with guns/ammo and everything else you need for a multigun shoot

I'm interested in growing 3 gun at my club. If he's right, and multiple guns per stage is keeping people out of it....the described scenario might help get them into it. Could just be a starter match at the begining of the season.

“If you build it (and advertise it on CGN) they will come”.

Hey, if I was in Vancouver and had no better shooting options that Wknd, myself and likely a few of my buddies would come. But, given the option, we’d rather be shooting a true 3 Gun Match.

Have the same issue at one of the ranges I belong to near my cottage. Trying to get members interested in IPSC and 3 Gun is really tough. We have both IPSC and 3 Gun disciplines at the club but most of the match competitors are non club members. Think it’s the cost putting our members off...for both disciplines. Our club puts on a fair number of events which frankly put me to sleep. I know if we could get some of our members out to shoot (or even watch) an IPSC or 3 Gun Match they would hooked.

Fear... and expense.

Blueridge is on my bucket list of 3 Gun matches. Would also allow me to stock up on some hard to find bourbon:) Super cool, thanx for sharing 667!

Will definitely have to get in shape and start training...especially for those 400 metres shots.

I shoot IPSC and and quite enjoy 3gun. The ones who hate it must be the same IPSC members who wear Soloman Speedcrosses to indoor ranges.

I've tried the speedcross on indoor concrete and thought they had terrible traction. Better off with running shoes or sport hikers with shorter treads.
