Why I don't compete

If you are serious about shooting LR, you will need to reload. That gear has also become really inexpensive.

All told, you rifle and scope can be had for around $1000. The reloading gear another $250 and components whatever you decide to shoot.

Personally, I would lean towards a 223 or 22/250 in a fast twist or a stock Savage in 243. Dirt cheap to shoot and really good LR performance. The larger cals are superb but costs go up in a hurry.

Jerry

I just started reloading, so I have that covered. I've got a couple rifles that might work for LR. One is a model 70 in .243 with a sweet trigger. My 7mm RM is my hunting rifle and it's staying that way! The model 70 might be the way to go.

i just finished a stevens 200 i might use to try out competeing after i stock up on ammo and get a whack of trigger time in. hopefully i can get some reloading gear by the summer as that will cut my costs down alot.
but as it stands the rifle and scope cost me well under $1,000

Oh, OK.

I've got a Stevens 200 .308 bedded in a 10FP stock with a 6-24 Bushnell that will get shot in a match this summer.

My first rifle match in 15 years or so.

There. Happy now?

:D

viper7, good start. Will I see you at the DCRA matches in Ottawa this summer:D Don't worry about the 15 years, it is just like riding a bike.

All 7 pages of this forum make interesting reading in one sitting. Seems to me the BC guys are well on the way to having something that is achievable and affordable for beginners in their Factory Class events and of course the Ontario crowd have the ORA, with whatever faults they have, providing lots of opportunities. Actually, it was the ORA guys who first launched Factory F class, if I am not mistaken.

Anyhow, I happen to know the guy in charge of the ORA Intro Days and I had a chat with him down our local club after reading all these comments. He assures me that the Intro Day is NOT the only place to start and guests are welcome at the ORA at any shoot year long. Just don't turn up unnanounced - email them first. he also tells me that Intro Day has been evolving since it was introduced in 2002 and now includes snaps on Fig 11's, prominently features Precision/Sniper events, Factory F, Hunting Rifle, Old Clunker events etc. He took on board the comments about end of day de-brief with thanks to the person commenting on that.

His parting comment before showing me how badly he can shoot a Tikka at 50 yards standing was to tell anyone who wants to ##### at or question the ORA to send their words to the ORA Promotions guy if they want a first hand answer. After all, if you don't tell 'em, they won't know and can't explain why!

Hmmm. I have the IPSC Nationals in Vancouver 1-5 Aug.

Not sure if I can do two in one month and stay married...:D

Might bring old paint up to NSCC in Sep though.

We have Military Issue rifle shots here in Vernon, (Lots this year '07) try to keep it at $10 for 1 rifle & 1 pistol, $5 each other class. I & others would like to go to Chillawack for the BCRA Service Rifle matches, but the cost of the BCRA membership, entry fees, ammo, gas to travel 800 + kms & finding a place to camp is about $600 for the weekend for the kid & me. Just can't do it:runaway:

If anyone is interested in the Vernon shoots, go to www.vfgc.ca for dates, rules & pics of last year.

I am a "Westerner", so I'm not sure if my reply is wanted. I belonged to a very active gun club in the 80's and early 90's out here in SK. We consciously tried to be "inclusive", keeping in mind that we needed new members to stay alive. We tried to set shooting events that could include the novice/first-time shooter, as well as events for the "advanced". Ours was very much an "atta boy" atmosphere. We we very fortunate to have an outdoor range where we could shoot almost any type of event - long range, shotgun, you name it. Our main focus was to have fun. We were able to keep our "fees" to a minimum, and were lucky to not have to cater to any "snobs" or land development. We openly talked about not becoming to "sophisticated" with our contests or equipment requirements. We fully realized that each shooter is different and would have his or her preferences, but still tried to maintain a reasonable appeareance to the public and any prospective members. Because everybody got to know everybody else, bringing a new person to the range was not cause for suspicious looks and grumbling about "strangers" taking over. We trusted each other's judgement. I must admit that a few eyebrows went up when I brought a First Nations fellow to a shoot. We soon swallowed him up and he became "hooked". Being "inclusive" isn't going to work everywhere. Some of the "old boy" clubs are destined to dry up. Most new people are not going to feel too welcome. So be it.

Any members views or reply's are welcome here as far as I am concerned and yours was a very very good one!!! keep posting

New scopes will be coming from a variety of sources which will make getting quality optics way more affordable then the current Leuppy/Nightforce type gear.

Jerry

Hey Jerry, What scope would you suggest for long range on a newb budget???

Cat,
From what I can see you guys have a very active shooting program out there. Maybe not formal matches, but at least there is some exposure to long range shooting.
I would love to come out and shoot with you guys some time, but you would have to give me your word the snow is gone. :D

We vstill have snow this weekend, and LOTS of it!!:(
I've broke trail out to thee 500 meter line a few times, but now the snow is suoper heavy and sticky, so it won't bve long.
Had a dozer lined up fro this week but it fell throughh.
maybe next week i'll be able to get it co-ordinated so we can get the lanes out to 1K.
Two of our guys want to get down south to shoot an F class and a TR match this summer, so maybe it will take off up here (with any luck)

My biggest challenge these days is trying too control the idiocy called vandallism .
What kind of SELF dISRESPECT does it take to shoot out the lights and the benches on your own range with a 45 auto?
I'm getting tired and fed up with this....
Catt

 Snow, too flipping cold for me to shoot. Temps here today are around 60F right now (it was in the high 70's last Tuesday). Fog is rolling in off Lake Erie about 1 mile away. Once that clears I will try to get some of the winter cobwebs worked out, with on 50m small-bore. First fullbore practice is 3 weeks away:rockOn:

Good to see some of your guys coming south for the CFRC this summer.

Hard to say what to do about the vandals. If you have a swipe card access you would be able to see who used the range. That would only work if they had to enter the building to access the range.
