Why is the Ammo situation so bad??? A answer that makes sense

Lots of 22 ammo eh? Then why do most stores limit amount per person? When was the last CCI anything stayed instock for more than an hour? I remember last winter a short period when most stores had several types of ammo and not just a few here and there. Hopefully that happens again and I can top myself back up for my picky rimfires. Centrefire hasn't been to bad, 12ga has been ok, but the price of trap load has gone way way up at my LGS's. found some for last springs price, may go get a few. In case anymore "incidents" happen.

What Canadian Tire are you referring to with a full case of .22 ammo...every one ive been at the case is empty..would love to pick some up...
I checked today and it is down a bit but here is what they still have, thousands of rounds I would say. That is in Cold Lake, if you are not too fussy there is lots of .22 there.

In speaking with some of my buddies in the states, they mentioned a couple things that some people might think a little extreme.
They have friends and family who have taken a second mortgage on their homes and purchased numerous pallets of ammunition with those funds. They also spoke of homeland security ordering vast amounts of HP ammunition which has also contributed to the shortages and the hoarding tendencies.
They also mentioned one of the reasons for the .22 cal shortages is it is (was) very cheap and lots of the .223 have a conversion kit where they can quickly convert it over to shoot .22 cal. This is ideal for some of the "preppers" if they run out of .223 ammo.
I stopped at CCI (Lewiston, ID) during my travels this summer and in speaking with the guys there, they are running at max capacity and making approx 5 million rounds per day. They can't keep up to the demand and are looking for ways to increase production.

This subject belongs on CGN's most frequently discussed subject. After bear defense and just before EE pricing rant.

Myself I just follow Andy's personal philosophy.

There is a small mutually supportive group I hang with. We look out for each other's needs at various gunshows, etc. No ridiculous hoarding by any means, but our annual hunting/shooting needs are easily met, no problems here!
Know your budget, keep expectations realistic, plan for the near future and don't get too greedy. The guy behind you might need something too.

Cheers!

buying ammo in bulk like that is a relatively new phenomena and no question helps to dry up supply… i think it happens more than is talked about. It also is likely bought for resale later on, as its hard to shoot that much ammo.
