I had an M1 ( actually an m2) many years ago.
Yes, the cartridge is somewhat underpowered.
But they were nor designed as a main battle rifle. They were designed to be issued to support personnel who needed to carry a light, easy to manage carbine and a good supply of ammo. . Either that or they had be satisfied with a 1911.
They did the job they were designed for quite well.
One problem is Hollywood that often shows U.S. troops in movies going into battle carrying M1 carbines when they probably in reality would have had a Garand.
