Why is the SKS so coveted in Canada?

They are cheap to buy, cheap to feed, durable, reliable and non-restricted.

What’s not to like?

This exactly, plus they are one of the few semi-auto rifle options now currently available, and also feels like owning a small piece of history.

I luv a big tomahawk steak or fine sushi but i am perfectly satisfied also with a hamburger steak, pepper sauce. The SKS is a no brainer to own.:)

SKS is the cats ass, brother. And they're leaving it alone, to boot. It's a solid gun, cheap, jack of all cartriges, semi.. sure if you want to spend 4x the money you can get something more refined.. it's getting to the point that I'd almost rather just have 4more of these bad boys in the vault.

If you’re into milsurps and don’t own at least 1 SKS then there is something terribly wrong with you. Also some Americans envy the fact that we have access to so many for so little price.
I had my Russian SKS in the early 90’s and that was a big deal because they were actually hard to get.
10 years from now guys will be saying man I wish I would have bought an SKS do you see what they are going for now!

I don't own one, nor do I want to. But I have shot a few.
None of the (5) I have shot were great. They were as accurate as throwing a slipper.
I get the whole 'cheap' surplus rounds, but really for what point is it if the holes aren't were you aim?
Am I just a 'bad' Canadian gun owner?

Number one you must be a Lousy shot . number 2 they are as someone else said a piece of History . number 3 they are Uber reliable . Number 4 someone said that they are ugly ? get you glasses cleaned . and as someone else said if you wanted to have one made for you from scratch nowadays it would cost you over $1000 dollars . heck I saw one of those new Ruger ranch rifles the other day a buddy bought and for over $700 dollars ? a Fugly hollow plastic stock and they copied the Receiver design of another company . they didn't stick with the Mauser type bolt that they have been using for years . and an accutrigger ? why not install a trigger that your employees have to fine tune ? time and money .

so do us a favor leave the slipper throwing rifles for those who can shoot or put in some range time .

I wouldn't say they are coveted, they are just cheap ugly junk that are purchased by kids who can't afford real guns.
Plinking is fun. I don't care to plink with my AI , shooting $1 a round ammo. I shoot an SKS while my expensive rifles barrels cool down and when I just want to roll cans. Not a kid by a long shot, and thankfully not broke. SKS and cheap ammo= fun. Nothing wrong with that.

Breaks clays on the berm, puts holes in paper pretty well where I figure they should be! At $200 for a solid rifle and 18 cents a round I can easily have a good time at the range. What’s not to like. Yes I do have to clean the sucker every time I hit the range but that is no hardship as I have been cleaning firearms since I was a kid. Gives you a good chance to make sure all is well with the firearm to boot. It rounds out my firearms “family” at a good price.

This sounds like the BS that was floating around 50 yrs ago, AKS, AK47, ugly, can't hit the barn, wrong country, Who needs a gun with a pistol grip? Belt feed? Why? sound familiar?

I don't love the SKS, nor do I know anybody who does to be honest. However, I've yet to meet a gun owner who can't see the value in a military-grade, cold-war-era, compact, reliable semi that once cost about $200 in this country. Maybe the OP is the first! :)

I was out shooting one of my 22s all day yesterday, load testing...chasing accuracy. Had a blast, but a buddy of mine brought a nice heap of less accurate "fun guns" among his other stuff. No SKSs mind you, but it was a gentle reminder that pin-point accuracy isn't the only place to find fun with guns. Sometimes...you do things like shoot pumpkins just to see chunks fly. :) I mean...I know a guy who likes doing that... :)

It is a matter of taste like most things
I think it is beautiful
It is not a accuracy rifle but with practice you can get a decent grouping out to 100
which is what was the intention.
It is also a hell of alot of fun

SKS is a post-WWII battle rifle, who cares if it is pretty or not? It does what is supposed to do and does it well. If I was in the middle of nowhere and I could only have one rifle it would be SKS and not one of those fancy AR-s. It will shoot no matter what with a bad guy MOA accuracy. But of course it is not a winner in a #### measuring contest of gun snobs, lol.

As soon as a shooter isn’t using a rest the cost vs accuracy quest tilts strongly in favour of the SKS. It’s the surplus Lee Enfield of our time. I don’t have one now, but I have in past. I satisfy the cheap challenge urge with 22rf.

I've had the opportunity to handle what must be at least a thousand SKS rifles within the last decade, the vast majority were refurb'd. They're almost universally well made, of a good design, safe to use and easy to learn on. Their popularity stems from their low cost in Canada. In the US, they are valued much higher than here despite better performing rifles being within the same budget. I would hazard a guess that either you're not a very experienced shooter, not familiar with iron sights or were using poor quality ammunition. None of that is meant to belittle, it could just explain your lack of appreciation. I've owned my own fair share and have found that when bedded at all and with a good bore I can expect 2-3MOA from them. That fits their design intent just fine and would satisfy most enthusiasts today. I suspect that most people who have bad experiences with SKSs merely have a badly bedded rifle that was refurb'd by on a monday morning. The bedding issue isn't as bad as with the SVTs but is still quite present.

Continue with cap guns and airsoft...come back in 20 years...

Sure, ugly and not super accurate But they also piss off the liberals so they good!

You do realize how easy it is for them to but it on the prohib list, eh?

Sure they're not registered, and they can't find them, but is it really as much fun shooting a gun you have to hide and run the risk of doing time?
