I don't own a mini-14, but I would bet heavy cash that most of the bad things you hear or read about them on the Internet is pure BS. I passed on the Mini and went with an AR-15, instead. Well, guess what? I'd also be willing to bet heavy cash that most Mini-14's out there would beat the ass off my AR any time, any day. I mean, I also have a CZ-858 and with open sights it beats my 7x scoped/free floated barrel AR by a significant margin at 100m. If it wasn't for the fact that I have so much money wasted on the AR so far, it would be just ridiculous. Right now it is only painful! Oh, and don't get me started on the trigger, it came with the absolutely worst trigger of ANY firearm I have, except for my very old mannlicher M95.
You have to keep in mind that most of those extolling the virtues of the AR are doing so by comparing fully loaded $2,500+ AR's to beat up old rifles costing much less than half of that amount. If a KAC or a Les Baer AR went for the same price as the mini, I'd say they were REALLY better. But as it is, it's like comparing a F1 race car to a Yugo. Of course they are better, but they also cost many times the price of the Yugo, and here in Canada could be driven only on the race track.
If I had to start all over, I'd go with the Mini-14, save a load of money and be able to shoot it in the bush, not only the damn shooting range. Just my opinion, thought!
