10/22 is great - you will want one for the simple fact that they are fun! Great little 22's for a great price. I've been through 5 of them, and I have one in the mail right now. My favorite is my takedown lite in the magpul backpacker X22 stock. Simply the best little 22 i've ever had. The nice thing is, ruger has some amazing and accurate 22s in bolt action as well. My ruger american rimfire shoots CCI tacticals into a cloverleaf at 50 all day long (as long as my eyes don't get tired or the swedish bikini team isn't on the range with me) but I have a much nicer cope and a bipod on that for stability, and I try to shoot it accurately. The ruger precision rimfire is on the way and its getting amazing reviews everywhere. Why do I bring this up? they all use the same mags - those reliable and awesome 50+ year old 10 round flush to the bottom rotary mags.
I've stuck with ruger and my first 22 was the 10/22. I've since wanted more accuracy and found it in ruger. since so many of the ruger offerings play nice together my 22 collection is strong and interchangeable. Something else to consider when thinking about the sport - interoperability - grab an ammo can full of mags n ammo and not worry if you have the right ones, and so many other benefits.
CCI tacticals work in all my 22s amazingly well it's my favorite 22 ammo, but CCI mini mags work just as well in the semi's (funny enough, the tactical, which is made for semis, but is so consistent out of the factory, works very well in bolt action, which consistency = accuracy)
