Picked this up on consignment yesterday, supposedly used, but I couldn't find a mark on it. The jewelled bolt shows no rubs or wear, barrel had a bit of carbon but no copper fouling, bolt lugs show nothing for wear at all, trigger wasn't even adjusted and was the factory 10lbs or whatever lawyer proof they sold them at in the mid 90's.
Had 30 year old packing grease in the guts and other places, basically like orange varnish at this stage, came off easy with solvent.
Was already lined up with some buddies to go shooting today so it was a mad scramble to clean it up, adjust the trigger, find some bases in the parts bin, scab a scope and rings off another gun, then load up 50 fresh rounds...got her done though lol.
So what is it...Win M70 Heavy Varmint in 243, these are kinda different as they used Wilson stainless barrels and very heavy profile, not sure I've ever come across cheap factory production rifle with this thick of a pipe, same HS Precision stock as the Stealth, but they pillar and glass bedded them, fits like a key in a lock in the stock, way overkill lol.
Now for the bad stuff and why would anyone want something like this today... factory 243 chambering with 1/10 twist, no AICS magazine, stupid barrel isn't even threaded, weighs a ton, no Creedmoor or fancy name for the cartridge.. ridiculous lol.
Anyway, the old M70 triggers are super easy to adjust to be great, I did zero load development, just threw together some 87gr BTHP and 95gr Nosler BT over a mid charge of 4350, once zeroed, groups were crazy tight, like I wish my 6mm and.6.5cm shot half as good lol.
Needs a real scope and rings, will source that out next week. Here is the pile of junk.

Well done. It should prove to be an excellent paper puncher. My back hurts just looking at that heavy barrel! lol. Great calibre btw !

From what the Winchester forums tell me online, they were Wilson Arms barrels.
I guess they use to supply barrels for Cooper as well back then when Cooper had a good reputation, then something went south with Cooper (they call it Coopegate lol) and Wilson Arms bought them out.

I think you should quit while you are ahead. You got suckered, but you laid out the mistakes. A crowbar of a barrel, an ordinary factory cartridge with no fancy name, and don't get me going on how difficult it will be to find (what is it?) .243 Winchester? Do they even make that? That stock is going to be way too stiff to take anywhere but to the range. It is going to be so predictable you'll wonder what is going wrong. Oh yeah, and it is just a factory Model 70. Not a boutique or exotic import. Quit now!

As much as the gun is soo outdated and in need of major upgrades and customization, it sucks for the gun because unfortunately I'm a purist at heart lol.
It will live out it's life as it came from the factory.
Had 4 other people with me, all hunters not target guys, even one wife that hadn't shot anything in years but was getting set up on a BAR in 243, she couldn't hit the target with it, put her behind this thing and she was shooting around 2" groups.
Then the guys had to give it a go, big smiles, and my brother stole the rest of my 95gr Nosler BT loads because they grouped so well in his Ruger.
 
Load some 58’s or 70’s and shoot crows with it. What you can kill with a heavy barrel rifle is often smaller and further then you could otherwise.

Some pitting in the bore after I scrubbed out the orange. I'll see how it shoots soon enough
 
Had one of those models in 22-250 in the 90’s. Brutally heavy but laser like accuracy! Finally decided it was too heavy to carry for coyotes but I’d buy another if I saw one.

I was thinking what this man just wrote . find a farm or local farms that raise sheep . ask if they have a Coyote problem and that you will respect the farm and get rid of their Coyotes for free. you want written permission if possible or tape record the conversation unbeknownst to them to cover you. look at it this way . you said it shoots like a dream and most stuff is crap nowadays . I hope you enjoy your new toy . happy safe shooting .
 
Oh I know the farm boys around here, been on a few groundhog extermination runs they do in the spring. No shortage of targets there lol.
