Why would someone buy a .17HMR?

accuracy you want accuracy

I have 4 rail guns, 1 dedicated for rimfire, you place the barrel (non-tapered) into the barrel block and then rotate the action into the clock positios and test the barrel accuracy for barrel indexing,
then you get the barrel chambered. so much to learn,

the 17hmr and 17mach 2 and the 22 long rifle can be made to shoot very accuractely,
just because you shoot minute or 3 of gopher dont expect others too,

IF NOT FOR US ACCURACY NUTZ YOU WOULD NOT HAVE GUNS THAT SHOOT SO WELL,
we test for the factory and hel pthem solve machining problems or tolerences,

so much to learn so little time

This is actually a really good attribute is it not? shot placement? i don't have groundhogs around here but i can say i actually shot a large bumblebee off a dandelion from 40ish meters away with my .17hmr. if i was killing anything larger like squirrels or groundhogs i'd enjoy the confidence of knowing i can put a really tiny bullet right in his ear if i wanted to. but im not so to me it's useless. to a varminter... priceless.

Mossy :D get used to the razzings, they can get pretty insulting if you actually take them seriously. personally i have found this forum, "CGN", to contain a large proportion of people who really get off on giving newbies a hard time. justifying them with any sort of response is truely "feeding the trolls". Also i have found that asking simple discussionary questions as threads usually never ends well if it's a topic thats been discussed even once already in the history of CGN.

I have played around with .22 rimfires from a very young age! Have built, owned and played around with most of the ctr-fires over the last 25 odd yrs. Also re-built lots of .22LR's. & converted a good nr of .22 mags into .17HMR. over the years! Actually; one of the very first that I converted/re-built into .17HMR while living back in NZ, was my very own single shot Anschutz 54-.22LR Match rifle, wich previous owner had put a 'ring' in the factory brl's bore! This was even a couple of months before the very first .17HMR ammo had hit the shores of our country!
I played around with this one for a while, trying to convince myself that ammo prices would come down shortly and performance was way better then .22LR? Well it never did and it wasn't! Actual fact was that prices seemed to go up every year! Sure; it proofed to be an amazingly accurate and flat-shooting round that handled the smallest of critters well with the Shilen Select Match tube fitted; however its sheer lack of 'real' improved performance on small game was duly lacking, when compared to its little brother with any of the Win. 'Subsonic'/Power-points or HV-HP rounds?
*For example: while shooting rabits, hares, possums, walibies & magpies on private farm-properties in NZ and the opportunity presented itself: try killing Red Deer & Wild Pigs with a single shot from the .17HMR; yeah right, unless you can get close enough & put em trough the eye-socket? Well, no problem whatsoever with any of the 40gr.-.22LR/HP slug mate! In the end I couldn't justify leaving my .22lr's back in the gunsafe any longer, so I traded it back for a nice Kauri stocked Lothar Walther .22LR Match! Then I moved to Canada and got 'hooked' on gophers!. Lucky me, that I still own this Lothar Walther .22LR Match 'Running Boar/Sihouette Rifle" and when fed with either 36gr. or 40 gr. Winchester X-pert .22LR-HV/HP ammo, it can achieve amazingly accurate & deadly hits everytime. Some at amazing Ctr-fire range distances under min. wind-speed conditions! Even a couple of friends of mine seem to have a very hard time every year, trying to copy these distant hits with their Rugers 77, Marlins, Savages & Brno's in .17HMR cal's! *So really: I still ask myself were all the fuss was about? There is still nothing viable out there in between the .22LR & any of the ctr.-fire rounds, that would justify an early retirement for any of my .22 Rimfire rifles! For this gopher-season, I think I'll be starting out shooting an HW77-.22cal. pellet rifle for the shorter ranges, where the gophers are thick & plentyfull, followed up with my custom Ruger 10/22HB for the medium ranges! Later in the season I'll be taking my newly re-built Ruger 77/22 along; fitted with a Anschutz 54 Match brl. (treaded receiver/brl-fitting off-course) for the longer ranges!
Maybe it will be 'on-par' with my Lothar Walther? Sounds sweet to me: I'm already starting to feel that itch coming back to me and will be looking forward to the upcoming gopher-season mate!
 
Gopher guns...

When I head to the gopher fields I take my 10/22, 17 hmr and 22-250 (oh and my 12 gauge), all have there place. The 17 sees about 5 times the shots of the 22-250 and the 22 sees about 5 times the shots of the 17, a good day sees 1000-1500 shots. I have the following rating criteria for a gopher gun: cost per shot, percentage of shots resulting in kills, function (considers ease of use, barrel life, reloading time, etc) and fun factor

- my 10/22 see a lot of ammo through it and works well on gophers under 100 yrds but 22's in my experiance require a lot of follow up shots and results in some gophers making it back down the hole. It gets a 10 in ammo cost, 4 in kill shots, 10 in functionality and a 6 in fun factor for a total of 30/40 points

- my savage 17 hmr gets 3 or 4 boxes through it on a typical outing, mostly one shot kills with some good flops and laser like out to 150 and capable to 200yrds. It gets a 5 in ammo cost, 8 in kill shots, 8 in function and 8 in fun factor for a total of 29/40 points

- My ruger #1 22-250 gets 20-40 shots through it on one of these outings, I reload for it and don't want to spend more time reloading than shooting gophers or wear the barrel out to quickly otherwise I would use it more. It does everything the 17 does but further and gets incredible air time out of gophers, were talking 10+ feet in the air. It would be great for a gopher area that wasn't infested and only had a reasonable amount of gophers. It gets a 4 in ammo cost, 8 in kill shots, 5 in function and a 10 in fun factor for a total of 27/40 points

So I guess the 10/22 is the champ for gopher guns but in my hands not much use beyond 100 yrds.
 
I have to agree that some gophers take a few shots with a .22 LR. With a .17 HMR its a different story, it opens them right up. No getting away.

I think I am going to pick up a plain jane model 10/22 for this gopher season. Nothing fancy, just a knock around gun.

I like the 12g best when the grass is up a bit higher and you know theres one cause you can see its tail twitching but not sure exactly where it is so you use the 12 gauge to mow the grass!

$153/ brick of 500, $16/ box of 50. The only other 17 HMR we have righ now is Winchester V max @ $160/500. We have lots of Hornady and only a little bit of Winchester. The availability of 17 HMR is very inconsistent and hard to predict. When the ammo and guns were first introduced the availability of ammo was scarce but got better over the next couple of years. Now it seems that the ammo is getting harder to find in bulk (at least for us). Phil.

My Buddys and i usually drive the field i load up the 12g with 2 3/4 trap loads . its fun for running gophers it usually turns them inside out . its good to about 20 yrds . if we are someone else land its walking with a 1022 . sometimes bring my robarm xcr with handload varmit grenades . to handload one for me is about 35 cents a 17hmr is about the same . But its a semi with a tenshot clip and is way more devasting to the gopher population. the xcr that is
