I've been invited to go Boar hunting on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Lots of hills, hiking and and HOT weather.

I figured that a carbine would be the way to go. Light weight and short.

Leaning towards a Mini 14 or 30. Would like an M-1 carbine, but it's restricted.

I don't want to spend a bunch of money.

Any suggestions?

M-1 Carbine is restricted in CANADA, not Hawaii. Get your LTATT and specify "Borders or point of exits" as well as "Any Gunsmith or licensed range"... now you can leave the country with your M-1.

I took my bow when I went.

Honestly there is so much built-up area that hunting with a rifle is probably a bad plan. An autoloading shotgun and slugs would be your best bet.
Cheers,
Grant

I think boar hunting is a great idea. ;) Pigs are a pest on the island and need to be removed.
I was based out of Kona and most of our hunting was done at ~4000ft. There weren't any houses up there! :D
The guys I was with had a 'trapper' length 44mag lever action and thought it was the perfect gun- light and easy to carry but enough punch when the dogs had the pig cornered.
If you decide to try a knife the locals will love you. I'm not sure if Big JD wants to make another one, but he sure does a kick ass job of it!

I have relatives that own a ranch on the Hilo side. It's a very casual affair and most use semi-auto's in .223 or 7.62x39.

Just come to Sask. The wild boars are like rats here. They are a dam nuisance, I've shot 108 in the past 2 winters. The more that are shot the better. They destroy lots of crop and have no natural enemies.

a lever .44 would likely be a nice short effective rifle.
My father got to go on a hunt there when he was in his teens, everyone used big ass handguns except one old boy who had an old and apparently very well used spear.

If ever there was a place for the old 30/30 this would be it.

I would go with a trapper.

Really? I did not think there was a large boar population at all in Canada......I would love to go on a nice boar hunt without the price tag of trying to get to the states.

There are some wild pigs in Alberta outside of Edmonton I think. Don't know if you can hunt them on public land. Maybe someone from Alberta will chime in....

Several counties have declared a problem and the Alberta government declared them a pest, putting them in the same category as rats, which must be reported to the government and eradicated.

Myself and a buddy have been trying to arrange a pig hunt for a year or more, but have not been able to find anybody who actually has seen one or killed one. We hear lots of stories, but never anything that is concrete. It is always the "my brother's neighbours uncle" type of thing.

Well I can guarantee you, that there are lots of boars running loose in Sask. They are a challenge to hunt. There is no way u will get them with a spear here. They love to get into the thick river bottoms and if the sows have little ones, you can become a target pretty quick. I had one wounded sow come out of the thicket and grazed my leg before I could draw a bead on it. Fun times!!

The only easy boar pods to get are the ones that haven't been shot at before.

Just wish there was a bounty on these critters.
