Wild boars are back in Eastern Ontario

One can find wild hog sighting info from this web site

As a hunter I wouldn't mind going wild hog hunting within 200km drive from GTA. I assume there is no season restriction.

never hunted a pig, time to research what type of ammo i should buy for my sks..

if it doesnt count as a regular hunt, can we take the plugs our of our shotguns? be handy to be able to toss 7 slugs into the super mag.

If the .223 round is adequate, I think your SKS would be superb. Ballistics like a 30-30 would probably make it ideal for the type of thickets hogs like to make their homes in.

I think (so don't take it for gospel) that since they're considered pests, you are not hunting them but eradicating them. In that case, I think there's no plug necessary for any shotgun.

I also think I'll bring my 590A1. In the US, I had my M&P45 as backup incase of a jammed AR with a charging boar bearing down on me (the pigs in NC are true boars and not feral livestock like in Texas or as it seems to be here now), but since we can't do that in Canada, I'll bring the Mossy so that I can affix the bayo to it to use as a pig sticker if it came to that....

Afaik, they are feral pests, not regulated by hunting regs. Shoot all you want and enjoy your bacon.

This is true, but I heard an MNR official state that they want to be notified when one is taken. Record keeping on the numbers out there, IIRC.

So once there is a true sighting, we will get a "work" party together. To help put bacon on some kitchen tables, and save some land from some deliciously evil beast.

I have 3 thoughts on this

1) Watch how fast people start getting arrested for using > .270 south of the french river (yes i know hogs are not small game, but just watch)

2) Now where did I leave my 6.5 swede

3) HEEEEEEEEEEEERE piggy piggy piggy

That restriction is only in the south west. Nowhere near these boars, and nothing to do with the french river.

I stand corrected on the french river. I was under the impression it was all of the "south".

that said, if you consult the wildboarcanada.ca map there actually ARE boar in SWO.

also MNR twitter confirmed that caliber restrictions do apply https://twitter.com/MNRFcentral/status/516997558649249792

Yes. YouTube is great for how to vids. Bear in mind that some feral hogs have trichinosis (more of a concern in the US I would assume, but doesn't hurt to be careful) so you might need to take some minor precautions.

thats the worm thing isnt it? i will google it but i believe there was a discussion about that on here in regards to baking sure you cook your bear meat all teh way through before consumption.

Pay to process a game animal. That's a very odd statement in my circles.

You can cut up a deer=you can cut up a pig IMO.

i dont have the facilities to go any further then cuting large game up into managable pieces. A butcher will cut and wrap, make up some ground meat, and make the saussages. This is also my first year hunting, so cleaning then paying for some proper cuts imo will make it easier for me.
