Will 17 mach 2 aka 17hm2 stick around

I hope it stays. Most point and shoot rimfire fun you can have in the gopher patch. I have ammo enough to last several years yet, both Hornady and Eley. At the end of the day I don't really care what it costs. I have a Savage Mk 2 that I got BNIB for $149.00. Accurate as all hell. If the ammo ever does dry up I'll simply throw it away. Or sell it on the EE as a rare collector's item......;)

WSS had quite a bit of Mach2 earlier this week when I was there, $10/box. For the majority of shooters, if they want cheap rimfire ammo, it's .22LR. If they want more power and flatter trajectory, it's HMR. At $4-5 per box, HM2 might have flourished. At double that price, it's destined to be shot only by the true fans of the caliber. I own a 17M2 Savage because I was able to acquire ammo between $1-5 per box when everyone was getting rid of it.
When my stash is gone, I expect the rifle will be also.

Just wondering why the Mach 2 and not just hmr?..They are both cheap enough to shoot..

It depends how much you shoot. When I purchased my 17mach2, I was buying Eley ammunition for $6 to $7 per box, while 17HMR ammunition was selling for $13 to $14 per box. We often fired up to 500 rounds per day shooting ground squirrels, so it cost $60 to $70 per day more to shoot the 17HMR. Many people find that $60 to $70 difference for a day of shooting ,to be substantial.

I believe the HM2 had a rough start in Canada. Early on there was ammo in some stores but no guns. In other stores guns but no ammo. I think that spooked the masses and coupled with pure Canadian "expertise" on the "need" of such a round, it never really took off. Which is strange as it seems to be holding it's own in the US.

The HMR was the first 17 rimfire. The wow factor helped it get a foothold.

Yeah I hear you guys..I just find the 17 hmr tricky enough in the wind and the 22 WMR kills better than it. I wouldn't mind trying a HM2 out though..

really

I've always tried to like the .17's but for the price and hassle- I'm better served by the centre fires or the .22. I suppose if I were just starting out again and didn't have a dedicated varmint rig - and I didn't reload ... I might consider one. But problems like these make me think better about it...

I use mine for small game. Rabbit grouse and squirrels. The mach2 shoots flatter then my 22 lrs making further shots easier to make. The hmr is to violent on edible small game and to light for coyotes in my opinion. Therefore the mach 2 makes sense

This is why I would like to try one.

So why is the BC. of the 40 gr bullet out of the 22 wmr only .114 not .128?..Also I use my own real world experience not computer generated graphs.

I guess it would be due to the shape of the bullet, although it doesn't say exactly what 40gr bullet was used.

Not many 40gr on that chart at the .128 mark either. But it's just a computer generated chart.....

I've been shooting the 17m2 since it first came out. Wind drift is not one of it's shortcomings from my experience.
