Will a well-placed 500 fps .177 pellet........

Rarely in my experience. However, CCI LR "Quiet-22" are 40 grain and go 720 fps. That is as low as I would go, and are quieter than most pellet rifles.

I use to shoot large black and grey squirrels in my parents backyard.
15-30ft. Head shots were the only thing that would put them down.
Body shots were not effective.
495fps .177cal

22cal at 495fps might do it. Never tried

If you absolutely need to off the critters with something non-PAL, what about a crossbow or airbow? The CO2-powered Umarex AirJavelin is in stock at both D&L and Airgun Source

In my experience a cranked up paintball gun works better on red squirrels than a pellet gun.

Regardless of whether you think a pellet rifle works, a trap is a superior option and will get more squirrels.

Traps #1
anything else #2
squirrels, hiding a head behind a branch or leaves, if you cannot get a clear headshot w a 22 PCP only a stomach or lower body it will still run/hide away even dragging the internals...tough little critters with very strong instinct for survival...especially the younger...

The little animal has avoided the trap like the plague. I'm thinking that it may have been caught and released previously. Therefore, as the US threatens other nations every other day, "all options are on the table".

#2 will be quite doable at 10 ft.......... with a little practice. (Obviously, may wife will be off shopping when I do the offing. I don't want her to see the dance of death shown in the following.)

BTW, our grey is probably only 1/3 to 1/4 of the size of the squirrels in that video.

Yes… only a headshot !
squirrels are not all the same… reds n chippys are easy.
black squirrels are tougher
Grey fox squirrels are pellet sponges.. my neighbour says they kill songbird chics in the nest.. they are aholes

...... more or less instantly, humanely kill a squirrel from 20 feet?

Thanks.

From back when I did shoot pests a sub 500fps .177 was very marginal on most things. However, a sub 500fps .22 was good up to and including jack rabbits at 10m.

What are you using for bait? I’ve always used peanut butter and jam with great success.

What ever max distance the pellet will penetrate a tin can ( not allum) should be doable but be ready to finish it off up close and personal hand to hand.

If your considering trapping I'm not so sure relocation is as humane as people think it is for squirrels.

We had a good neighbourly squirrel we decided that we would let live. He was killed by more aggressive squirrels. The new squirrels quickly wore out their welcome and are no longer

Peanut butter. My wife and I have actually watched the little devil crawling around the outside of the trap and it's very interested in the peanut butter from the sides and top of the trap, but it will aboslutely not enter the door-end of the trap. Like I said, I think it's been trapped before and doesn't want to take aother trap trip.

It's not Rocket Surgery..... :) 12 inches of water, less then 30 seconds of treading water.
I'd try and rig some sort of cover above it to keep the birds away and let the squirrels in underneath for yard use but you get the idea.

Good design, butt the problem is that my wife would like to allow two small red squirrels to live in our yard, but get rid of the larger, more aggressive grey squirrel that is a real pest. We placed the trap in a location (on top of a bird feeder) that the red squirrels never visit because it takes quite an acrobatic procedure to get to that place and the small red squirrels can't perform that procedure (yet, anyway). So far, it's a bridge too far for animals that small.

Therefore, whatever method we use to get rid of the pest has to be selective. I'm now thinking that punishing the pest wilh a slower pellet from our Crossman Classic pistol might discourage the pest from returning to our deck. I'm thinking about starting off with a pellet pushed out by one pump and see if that does the trick. If it doesn't, two pumps, then three, etc., until he doesn't return. I can test what every additional pump will do on some stacked sheets of paper or cardboard. Of course no head shots until the Final Solution. To deliver the latter I've ordered a slingshot because I'm now not sure that a 500fps .177 will kill quickly.
