Will coyotes keep the deer away?

Seen carcasses this fall from two 8 point bucks, killed by coyotes. They run them to exhaustion, then feast.

Predators and prey co-exist until the food source is outnumbered +eliminated.Like killing off the surplus wolves and like magic , the caribou numbers come back...............who knew?

coyotes will not drive the deer off unless you have the mother of all coyote problems. just 2 days ago i called in a coyote through a herd of deer. they were scattered all over and he ran the trail right past them on his way to me. killing some especially in spring will help with fawn mortality rates but thats about it.

Kill! They are a big problem to deer, and especially to farmers and the loss of there live stock. Which in turn costs them thousands, and in turn the government gives the farmer tax dollars to reimburse them for there loss. Kill coyotes, a farmer will love you for it, he might even pay you to do so.

"Killing Coyotes only makes them produce more" is animal rights, bunny hugger bullshyte being fed to a gullible public that doesn't know better. Whack every one you see,Deer or no Deer.

Then please explain how they did so much better than wolves during the "kill all predators" days of yore?

Not only did they survive, they expanded their range during that time.

Maybe, because wolves were the main target? Who knows? The most we can do is keep the population numbers under some form of control.

its because of the coyotes "responsive reproduction" in an undisturbed environment top dog momma coyote will do her best to stop breeding among other pack members or coyotes in her area. when there is lots of disturbance in the pack hierarchy by hunting or trapping then everyone will breed causing even higher pup numbers than before and so on and so forth.

Coyotes were directly targeted. It resulted in the expansion of them out of the Southwest and into every state and province; and major city on the continent. Not only is killing coyotes a waste of time in a population control sense, they also have a minimal impact on deer populations.

To the OP where I've got my trail cam set up you'll see bears, deer and coyote all within an hour of one another.

Coyote numbers are way up locally.
Deer numbers are down.
Even does are hard to come by out in the bush.
Hence my interest in taking up a new sport.

I was watching the "sportsman channel" the coyote problem is so bad in Ontario you can hunt them year round.

id say early spring before pups are born. when you kill the mom your eliminating up to 6 of the fawn eating buggers

as a Coyote hunter i only hunt between Dec/Jan depending on the current (climate changing) weather - i think everything has a right to live and do their part - not worried about Coyotes taking a fawn or two - it makes the whole deer population more stronger.

i do think we have to look at ourselves as the cause of this problem - we have been taking their land away for years - the building of new homes is one reason - yes we can hunt all year round - we can also support local farmers too all year round by buying in season fruits and veggies at the local farmers market. I buy my fresh eggs from farmers and honey too - i do not mind paying their asking price. Without farmers there will be no breakfast.

I do enjoy hunting coyotes even though they play an important part in nature:

"Coyotes play an important ecological role helping to maintain healthy ecosystems and species diversity. As the top carnivore in some ecosystems, coyotes provide a number of benefits including regulating the number of mesocarnivores (such as skunks, raccoons, and foxes) which in turn, helps to boost biodiversity."

If coyotes kept deer away like some misinformed hunters would have you believe, there would be no deer anywhere because coyotes are everywhere.

Matter of fact, the large forest tract with the highest coyote population in my area also holds the highest concentration of deer. Some people think coyotes only eat deer when it's actually just a small portion of their regular diet most of the year.
