Will The Modern Hunter be my new rifle

Hah, now I really want to get one of these and make a point of having it with me when I knock on landowner's doors asking if I can hunt on their property.

Just because you have 2 or 5 or 10 or 100 shots does not mean that you must, or even will, use them. I actually find it a little concerning that when Billabong thinks of a semi-auto he associates it with uncontrolled rampages and "mowing down herds", but it's not a discussion for the ATRS forum.

Well. All I can say is WOW! Take a day off and this is what I come back to?

Shorty. I too am not a fan of having beer can holders, condom dispensers, flash lights, lasers and other assorted crap attached to my guns. Pink fur dice or CDs hanging from my rear view mirror adorn my car also do nothing for me. Some folks however DO like to accessorize" their guns and cars.
The ADVANTAGE to the 60 year old (modern by gun terms) modular style rifles is that YOU decide what the grip, stock and hand guard feels like.
There are a virtual ton of various components that can alter what the look and feel of a "modular" rifle has. This is something the conventional (fudd style) "hunting" does not have to offer to much or any degree.
I guess the real question that only you can answer is whether you like the more modern style and modularity of this types of rifles or not.

Billabong has eluded to reliability and accuracy. The AR platform, which the MH shares quite a lot commonality to, has been well proven in the military since the 1960s, so although not having the 200 odd years of experience that today's bolt actions have, a 60 year history is saying something.
Accuracy, like with bolt guns dictated by how well the platform is designed, assembled and the quality of the parts used. The AR platform has a long history of being quite accurate, certainly on par with many bolt guns. Frankly will we ever be able to achieve the same level of accuracy from our Modern Hunter as we can get from our bolt action rifles? I seriously doubt we can make a semi that is sub .2 MOA capable. Now then a question. How many hunting rifles can even produce .5 MOA? My guess damned few if guys are honest, yet our MH DOES produce .5MOA groups as was witnessed on Saturday at RDSC.

Is the Modern Hunter the right rifle for all purposes and all people? Frankly no. Does it fill a niche within the Canadian shooting culture? Yes.

Billabong. Thankfully your line of thinking is not common. If the auto industry were to use your line of logic we would all still be driving Model Ts.
Progress and advancements are made in most areas of life. Make NO mistake ALL firearms were originally designed to kill people NOT big game animals. The advancements in the firearms industry mirror the auto industry in many way. 100 years ago cars had steel bumpers and dash boards, some wood was still employed in many and leather seats were common and doors were bolted on. A car that lasted 100000 miles was not all that common and top speeds were under 100 MPH for the most part.
Today polymers are used for bumpers, dash boards and many other parts. Good luck finding any wood in most modern cars, even my BMW has fake wood trim. Leather seats are now a major upgrade in many cars, most are easily capable of plus 100 MPH and try to find a car that has its doors bolted on. THAT is called progress.
In the firearms industry, wood stocks are becoming an anomaly, mostly due to the cost of wood and more so because of the costs to make and finish wood stocks. Blueing is old technology simply because it is labor intensive and not nearly as durable as most of the newer finish's are.

Imagine what the fudds will be saying in another 60 to 75 years, assuming that we still inhabit the planet and that there is still some wildlife left.

Do it! My wifey was oogling a BLack rain, but I hae sold her on the MH. Once I have the funds together that's the next toy for her.

LOL! Is that like last Christmas where you bought here a new bowling ball with your name inscribed on it?

I gave Shorty my honest, polite opinion. Not sure how I would have insulted anyone. Like I said, if you don't like my opinion, you can ignore it.

I also never said that semi-auto was "wrong". I have several semi-autos. I don't hunt with them, but that does not mean that I don't like them.
Is a 10 round semi auto AR the gun I would use or recommend to someone for big game hunting? NO, it is not.

Just because it's a semi with a "10" (...5?) round mag, doesn't mean you have you have 'light up' your target with the whole mag. I'm sure you're capable of enough self-control to limit yourself to just one shot, (and then a second one, if needed).

If anyone, including you, has found a rifle they like (feel, weight, grip, ergonomics, etc.) then so be it. A rifle is a rifle. One pull of the trigger produces one round, whether it's a semi or bolt. There should be no issue with hunting with one. If you don't, that's your choice - but that's all it is and there really is no other reason to not hunt with a semi.

I have two very accurate bolt actions for hunting. The last thing I would consider for a Modern Hunting Rifle is something with a stubby barrel and a semi auto action. Sold my last 1022 cuz it sprayed. My bolts are tack drivers. Then again $4k would pay for both 30cals and the Leupold VXIII on each one. I am also concerned that almost all of the AR series are restricted regardless of the length of barrel. If I bought one for a SHTF scenario the guvamint would likely come looking for it anyways. My wife and I discussed an AR pattern as a defender but I am having trouble justifying it for either use. Short barrel shotgun and a pistol are looking better for home defense too. I guess you have to love the look of the black or green guns. Then again there may be more here than I am aware of .....

You do know that the Modern Hunter is not an AR clone, and classed as non-restricted?

I like the joke...I must admit, I feel like that some days when I drive the highway!!!

The benefits of a semi auto, high round rifle in big game hunting are: fast repeat shots and plenty of ammo to follow up on your poor/misplaced shots.
There are no other reasons.
These guns are usually less accurate than bolt actions, they are less reliable due to more moving parts and are heavier to lug around in the woods and up mountains.
They are expensive. For $3000 you can buy two well made bolt actions with scopes that will shoot 1/2 MOA all day long.
I can see the application in hunting a pack of coyotes or a town of prairie dogs (although most hunters I know use .223 or smaller for this purpose, not the .308 we are discussing here). The .308 is a large game caliber, generally used on big critters like moose/elk/bear/deer. You are not going to be mowing down a herd of these (not legally anyways-not in Canada).

Therefore, the whole "benefit" of using such a rifle in big game hunting rests on the assumption that the hunter using this firearm is a poor shot who should not be out there in the first place.
It disrespects the game animal and the hunter who uses it.
Want to be an ethical hunter? Learn how to shoot accurately. That way you won't need a semi auto with 9 rounds to follow up on your gut-shot buck
.

Wow... that's somewhat condescending, no?

"Disrespectful" ... "ethical" ... And, of course... "assumption". Well, you know what say about making "assumptions"... it makes an ass out of U and mptions.

Kidding aside, there's something kind of... preachy, and fudd-like, in your pronouncements. A LOT of guys hunt with semi's. That does not make them "disrespectful", "unethical", or "bad shots" who need to "learn how to shoot accurately". Some guys with semi's I know could out-shoot you and your bolt-gun any day.

I also wouldn't use a gun like this to hunt big game, but it sure as hell wouldn't bother me if someone else did. Your rant is fraught with irony and contradictions but I guess you can't see that from your elevated elitist pedestal. How is using a scoped 7mm not represent a tool that gives you every advantage? How does it give the animal a fair chance? Hunting traditions? I suggest you either sharpen your arrowhead and start practicing those spear throws or quit being supercilious.

There ya go.

Nope, there won't be any wildlife left, because according to the 'deer-hugger' here, we will have mowed them all down, entire herds at-a-time, with our semi-auto Modern Hunters!

From the ATRS website;

The Modern Hunter will come with one 308 PMAG, others will be available for purchase for $28. They are black in color. 10rd or 20rd mags pinned to 5rds are available.

So he got that wrong also.

Well I'm fairly sure Billabong is in the wrong camp entirely here folks, and am tired of him throwing his slang and accusations about us and this rifle. If he doesn't like it move along,,and when I walk by you In the bush with mine you can have a temper tantrum and contemplate the ethicality of it all you want , because I don't care what you or guys like you think about it.If you really are a hunter, I hope and pray you find a new hobby such as stamp colledcting because your attitude stinks.
