+1 for a bigger cartridge. I use .223 (Hornady V-Max 60gr). I'd be afraid a .22LR would only wound, and he'd reach the treeline and be off to a slow, painful death. A quick kill is always best. I agree with the shot-placement statements, but a bit more oompf will help correct some mistakes, especially if you have to take an unsteady shot (coyote on the move, shooting unsupported)
