Will you hunt Grouse with .22LR

If your starving in the wilderness, go ahead and shoot a bird on the ground. If not, be a good sport and wingshoot. If you like shooting things on the ground, come out to the prairies and shoot some gophers.

For those that have never wingshot, a 12G with 7.5 shot will not wreck a bird. Shoot, we lose more birds from the dog getting rough than we ever do from shot up meat.

If a guy in my hunting party shoots a bird on the ground, he'll get left at home in the future. Same thing goes for taking a low shot and not watching out for the dog.

You are taking one hunting area/situation and applying it to everybody. I think I have seen a grouse fly maybe a half dozen times in my life. Heck, old-timers snare them around here. :) Also, I drove across Saskatchewan many times, I never did see any 9 foot waves. ;)

You'll admit to allowing an improperly trained dog to ruin a grouse to the point you consider it lost, but you think it's acceptable to berate a person for head shooting grouse in order to ensure that no meat is lost?

Sporting indeed!

First one I saw killed was with a .22, was a nice shot too. I'm going out hunting tomorrow w/the boyfriend since season is finally open and I'm pretty sure we're bringing the .22 and 410 if I can sweet talk him. I just passed my course so I haven't killed anything myself yet so wish me luck, it's my turn to shoot a bird (or five)!

Good luck. Something makes me think that your boyfriend is pretty excited to go hunting with you and also very proud of you for taking, and passing the course.

I respect your desicion to hunt how you do. However, i don't hunt that way. Around here, the name of the game is bringing meat home. To me, hunting is not a "sport". If i'm going to kill something, i can't make a game out of it. Do i enjoy shooting on the wing? Very much so. Does it make me feel bad to shoot a bird on the ground or out of a tree? Not one bit. In fact, i killed 2 today in those exact situations. Was it less "sporting"? Yeah, it sure was. Am i cool with that? Again, very much so. I'm not putting you down for hunting the way you do. I just don't like it so i don't do it.

All of us have different ethics and practices when it comes to hunting. You go your way. I'll go my'n. We do wingshoot around here. But it's more out of necessity than it is for "sport". Enjoy your hunting season. Good luck to you.

Back to the OP:

Hi Folks,

Ever tried Grouse in ON with .22 LR.

It can get you started when Deer Season coming to Close.

Comments and Experiences?

I've used a .22 probably hundreds of times on partridge in ontario. Works well around here but the birds i shoot are usually pretty stationary until the guns start firing. I've killed some in southern ontario and it's a whole different ball game down there. They fly as soon as they see you and they fly very far so a shotgun is you best bet.

The reason i prefer a shotgun is that when i kill the first one, (usually on the ground) sometimes there are more that will fly after my first shot and i'm not comfortable firing a .22 into the air to try to hit another. I am, however, comfortable firing a shotgun into the air. Just the way i do things. Other people may like to do things differently. Good luck OP.

I love using a 22 to hunt grouse. My 10/22 has always been my grouse gun, and has taken many forms over the years to accommodate grousing. This is it's current configuration, and I am VERY happy with it.

ER shaw 11.5" barrel, PC rail, VQ extended bolt handle, Leupold FX II 2.5X20mm w/ low PRW rings, sitting in a sanded down butler creek .910 target stock.

Only chumps shoot birds on the ground.

:jerkit:
Only arsewipes degrade another's choice of legal hunting method.

Indeed. This type of behavior is no better than an anti in my eyes. If it is legal to do so, go for it. Use this gun only for this purpose. Use this gun only in this area. Only these people should have this gun. No one should own guns. It's all the same to me.

If you want to only use a shotgun, only on flying birds, knock yourself out. If someone is legally able to shoot the same bird in the same area with a rimfire, what business is it of yours to say it is wrong? Because you feel that way? Like some feel no one should own guns at all?

.22LR if I want to get some grouse breasts for dinner.
12ga. if I feel like wingshooting and don't want to go to a pond and set out decoys for ducks.
My bow if there are a lot of grouse out and want a challenge.

Your assuming the world revolves around Regina now. Nobody said we don't shoot flying birds, I love my shotgun more then any other. You obviously have never left the prairie. When you get into light woods a shotgun may work fine. When your deeper into thick bush and forest you won't be able to swing your gun. If you do a ruffed grouse will disappear through an opening in the tree's pretty darned quick.

You want sporting? Trying doing that with a bow shooting them on the wing. ;)

Wow! First time I have ever had to quote myself on CGN! Pretty sure I explained everything for you already, but one more time for the people who cant read! Either that or you are about as close minded as some politicians, and can't get it through your head that there are different environments, and methods that better suit those environments!

But it's OK to shoot every other game on the ground?

You do realize that grouse where I hunt rarely fly right! Only when they are in danger, and scared! I am a humane hunter and like to take out my prey as quickly and quietly as possible, preferably before they even know Im there.

I can just see you trying to hunt deer. Spot em off in the distance, and try and get close enough to get a shot off. Then just when the moments right you scare the s**t outta him causing him to start running at full speed. Then and only then do you take the shot! LOL

There isnt any room for them to fly in the bush I hunt! No open fields around here, and even if they do take off in an opening in the trees, or on the trails they just fly 10m right back into the bush anyways! A shotgun would be useless, and I dare say too easy anyways. Come check me on the trap field! Trust me I can hit them in the air just fine!

I've even stooped to the caveman approach successfully throwing rocks.Nowadays I let my kids shoot most of them.410/.22 Savage 24 and I drill a couple a day with my HW80K/.22 800fps pellet rifle......................Harold

It's analagous to scoring a goal in hockey. You got your garbage goals, you got your finese goals, your got your long distance sniper goals, you got your screen shot - deflection goals. Everybody has their own style, they're all legal, & at the end of the day they all count up on the tally board. Most likely we all carry on the traditions/techniques of how we were introduced to the sport by a father, friend, coach or big brother.

I disagree! It's not about the goal, it's about the ICE! Or the environment you are in for me anyways. Just like deer hunting for example. If I was hunting deer on the prairies I would be looking for a flat shooting cartridge to reach out and get those long shots because it is hard to sneak up and get real close to a deer in an open field with no cover. On the other hand if Im in dense bush it is more likely that I am going to be getting closer shots, and Id rather be carrying a shorter lighter carbine like a 30-30, or .44 mag lever!

I could call the guy taking 300m shots at deer unsportsmanlike, because I am more of a stalk and shoot hunter, but his situation basically requires this type of shot! just because his situation is different from mine doesnt make it wrong!

There's a lot of self-righteous f**kers on this forum these days. Shoot them any way you want.

I usually carry a 20ga and shoot them when I see them. If they are on the ground, so be it. If they flush, I'll wing shoot them, so be it. Have shot the odd bird of opportunity with a .308, .300wm, and even a couple with the .338WM. Head shots save meat.

I have no problem shooting a rabbit on the ground either.;)

I wait til the rabbit jumps and them time my shots between blinks...if you DO NOT do this your a jackass and a sad excuse for a man...REALLY why do we all hate each other if we do something different then you personally, if its still legal its sitll OKAY to do...we don't even need the Liberals to take away all our rights, we will do it to eachother

Only the most unethical of hunters would allow a dog to "get rough" and waste the meat of the noble game bird that's life you have taken.

What a disgusting display of poor meat care.

I beg to differ. The following birds were all shot on the wing with 6's. The first two pics show when it goes right.

The last illustrates what happens when you are a little back on the bird.

Headshots on the ground are guaranteed not to wreck meat.

And anyone who hunts with me with a dog that rips up birds better be only retrieving birds he shot.

+1. Losing birds to the dog is far, far worse than using the .22.
