Winchester 1200 bolt lock / action question

I have a Winchester 1200 which may be behaving oddly. I do not know enough about the action to say for sure.

When I shoot it, without anything touching the forearm, the slide will be sent all of the way back after the shot. This seams odd to me, and was pointed out to me by a bystander at the range today. It seams to me that the bolt should remain locked until the pump is manually cycled.

Is something broken on the gun, or is this intended?

It is the way they are made and it is safe... I used to do Winchester warranty and I contacted them about that very thing many years ago. I have seen shells completely ejected just by firing without holding on to the forearm.

It isn't really a blow back but when the pressure is up the rotary lug has enough pressure against it to keep it from turning.... as the pressure drops the lug may or may not open on it's own..... no pressure is vented out the breech...

That actually is one of the features that Winchester touts about this particular shot gun. The bolt lugs are probably really smooth allowing it to open a little more then usual

Strait from Winchester

The Winchester® Model 1300 Speed Pump™ : no other pump shotgun offers the same speed and agility. Thanks to the innovative inertia-assisted pumping of its proven rotary bolt action, the Model 1300 is capable of shooting three shots in just over a half second.
