Hi CGN,

I have had my winchester camp defender for 10 years and its been my bush gun. I have noticed that it always jams with Remington Trap ammo.

What happens is that when pumped, 2 rounds come out of the magazine, which ends up totall jamming the gun. If its a SHTF situation (i.e. predator incoming, then I will get ####ed 7 eaten.

If the gun is so picky abojut ammo I will have to do trials with brands of ammo to find some that works. This would be a PITA and I rather get another gun.

Is this something common about those guns? Can it be fixed? Should I not trust that gun anymore? Get something else?

I am thinking to replace it with a Baikal side by side coach. Or maybe a Rem 870, but I wonder if a pump is really a good idea over a side by side (which should never jam) for SHTF.

Thanks

Have you tried other ammo? Trap loads are not really SHTF ammo. Buckshot or slugs should be tried to see if they give you the same problems.

Yes and no ... I have large amounts of that Remington trap ammo so that gets used for rapid fire plinking, rather than the expensive SHTF stuff ...

The gun doesnt seem to jam with Mirage trap ammo when 8 rounds are rapid fired. It looks like its ammo related but I am thinking that trap and skeet ammo would be made to be reliable since some folks fire it from autoloaders.

It is possible that the piece that keeps in the mag is worn so when its cycled 2 slip through ... I cant tell though ...

The biggest thing is that I dont want to have a SHTF that fails under any circumctances...

It is a inherent problem with 1200,120, 2200, 1300, and any other name it goes under the magazine throat is made from plastic a two piece assembly and it tends to wear out it can also be the cartridge stop they tend to bend slightly over yrs of use and will cause the double feeding not a very good design, on the other hand for the millions of these guns that has been sold since 1965 the numbers with the problem is relatively small.

Thats what I thought, worn or bent stuff :(

Problem is that this makes the gun a liability for everything other than plinking...

Are Remington 870 better/more reliable or should I go double barrel coach gun?

For serious work I would skip the coach gun and just replace the 1300 or get an older Wingmaster. If my life was on the line I'd be carrying a Browning.

I love my 1300. I've never had an issue with it in the field, at the range or on the farm. I was hoping to buy another one off my father-in-law, and use 1 for deer (put on a rifled barrel), 1 for plinking/trap/on the farm and then get a dedicated turkey gun (remington 870 sps turkey/predator) as well.
