Winchester 140/1400 12G valve cap

The uncle mike's style barrel band is the fastest easyest most cost effective way of putting a sling on the gun . And it works very well .
 
Actually u can drill a hole in it the cap is just the vent the gas is regulated by the piston in the mag tube not the cap . Before everyone jumps on this 7 yrs winchester warranty smith and 30 yrs general gunsmithimg
 
Thats what I thought. Yes you just drill the outer cap and I'm sure you can get mag cap and either thread it and use a machine screw style sling pin or find a c Clip style. Even if it did vent you could just jb weld it to the inside and it would be sealed.

I personally can't stand slings on my shotguns as I've never found one that is actually long enough to go over your shoulder and back when wearing a parka. I don't like slinging them over my shoulder on 1 arm only.
 
A cap off of a model 1200 1300 with sling stud would be easier than drilling the 1400 cap. If Struff says the 1400 valve in the cap has minimal effect I believe him. He does know Winchesters.

Ya I wish I didn't have to use a sling but I have to. With all the decoys and crap we have to carry to the pond I need the strap to carry the gun. I think I'm gonna go with the barrel band as that is the most simplest least intrusive method.
 
Is the valve in this cap spring loaded? I just got an old 140 and the valve just rattles around inside it. If it's a relief valve shouldn't it be held firmly against the hole?
 
I unscrewed the end of the cap. No spring, just the valve. I figure it got lost or corroded away before I got it. I will try to find one to put in there. I figure it would be a heavy spring to hold this closed.
 
The purpose of the valve is to release more gas than normal if a heavy, magnum load is fired. If the gun runs OK with what you are shooting the valve is not required. The only issue I can see by having the valve not working is that very light target loads may not cycle the gun. I have a feeling if the gun's gas system is kept very clean it will cycle 95% of loads without the valve functioning.

Mine won't cycle anything at all. With the valve just open all the time I can see why. There is no way it will build up enough pressure to cycle. I have a substitute spring in it now and will try it out today.
 
Success! Seems like that was the issue. I just tested with 3 rounds each of value pack 3 dram #7-1/2, Heavy Game load 3-1/4 dram #4 and Mini mag 4 dram #4. All cycled beautifully!

Easy, cheap fix for a gun I paid $100 for.
