Winchester .22 lr 333 packs for deer and bear.

Bella Twin, an Indian girl, and her friend Dave Auger were hunting grouse near Lesser Slave Lake in northern Alberta. The only gun they had was Bella’s single-shot bolt-action .22 Rimfire rifle. They were walking a cutline that had been made for oil exploration when they saw a large grizzly following the same survey line toward them. If they ran, the bear would probably notice them and might chase, so they quietly sat down on a brush pile and hoped that the bear would pass by without trouble. But the bear came much too close, and when the big boar was only a few yards away, Bella Twin shot him in the side of the head with a .22 Long cartridge. The bear dropped, kicked and then lay still. Taking no chances, Bella went up close and fired all of the cartridges she had, seven or eight .22 Longs, into the bear’s head. That bear, killed in 1953, was the world-record grizzly for several years and is still high in the records today. Which only goes to show that in an emergency, strange things are possible, but who wants that kind of emergency?

the lowly 22 round says dangerous to a mile for a reason. not sure why its lethality is doubted as history has proven it to be very lethal over and over again.

Most poachers here in Alberta use 22LR and spotlight hunt at night. The 22lr works JUST FINE. Have you ever seen a penetration test of a minimag? They're on youtube. Put it in the lungs and they will kill deer, no problem!

Where were you able to learn this information from?

I once shot a deer several times in the neck with a 22. Most of the bullets were found stuck in the fat, under the hide. Very little penetration, except the one that cliped an artery.

Never again.

My Grandfather shot his first deer as a young teenager working the lumber camps in Bathurst, NB in the early 30's. He said the camp cook traded him rifles for the day, the cook took my Gramp's Model 94 .30WCF and went deer hunting on his day off. My Grandfather decided to take the cook's .22 and go "pot" a few grouse as he used to say. Said he was hiking along when he spotted antler's so he stopped and looked close and could make out the shape of the deer through some brush. He shot it in the chest and it turned and ran. Was about a 40 yard shot. He thought he missed but then thought "well maybe I hit it the , tail was down" so he followed in the direction it went and there it was about 100 yards away stone dead. He had hit it in the heart and killed it. He always said it was pure luck.

This is similar to how I got involved with a 22 and deer. terrible snow storm., Quit deer hunting, went back to camp to get my 22 and some partridge for the pot, and immediately found the deer.

I watch that show Swamp People and they dispatch gators with .22 all the time... except for the one guy who has a "high power 270 caliber" (guessing they meant .270)

Possible yes, ethical no. A great many old farmers shot off season deer back in the day with a 22. Some probably still do. My grandfather was chased around the pen by a boar pig he had shot in the head with a 22 single shot. After shooting it 9 more times in various locations while running away he threw down the gun, jumped the fence and walked across the road to borrow a 30 30. My mother said it was the worst meat she ever ate. 22s can kill but shot placement is critical!
