Winchester 70 hunt with ? Or not.

I had really nice Browning Xbolt SS , 7 mm, it used to take a scatter bump getting in and out of the SxS

SS barrel and synthetic stock hides things that a wood stock with bliuing won’t , I guess.

I’ll be extra careful with this one though.lol

Never had one this nice looking before, had a few more expensive but not this pretty.. lol

Not overly rough but not to delicate .
Right on
Buy a good soft gun case for when boats, quads or other rough use situations happen. Enjoy!

I don't see the point in owning a gun you won't use and I am definitely not from the "it's too pretty to shoot camp". On the contrary I am from the "life is too short to shoot an ugly gun camp". I don't even own a synthetic stocked firearm with the exception of an El Gamo air rifle. If it doesn't have nice wood it isn't going home from the store with me, lol.

I suspecting it’s in the 1800-2200$ range which is certainly enough for a production level gun but that is what it is a nice high grade hunting rifle made for hunting.
When a person starts paying 2500-3500$ for the stock only and another 3500 ish for the metal work then one has to think about using it or not using it .
Having a higher grade rifle such as yours is what makes going into the field a joyful day .

So today I seen a beautiful win mod 70 , new production chambered in 7 RM.
Oh, it has a beautiful Maple stock.

Anyway, I could not stop myself from buying it.
So I made a payment with what cash I had on hand and will pick it up next week.

The dilemma?
The more I think about it , I’m not sure I want to hunt with it.
Unless maybe I use a synthetic stock for hunting.

I don’t really need to hunt with it as I have an extra Tikka 7 mm barrel that I was planning on installing.
Maybe just pack it away and leave it to the son.

Hey,

I was in your shoes this fall just before moose season.

I, purchased pre64 m70 3006. A real beautiful rifle, wood and all…just gorgeous lol

After I sighted the scope, I took it with me for my week long moose hunting and it was a bonding experience I will never forget..

My advice is…take it with you hunting, and use it as much as you can. That is the reason you purchased it ;)

Im sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Cheers,

Just remember to go on that hunt, you're likely trashing a 50 to 100k pickup to get in, riding a 10k atv, wearing $400 boots and at least that in camouflage. The list goes on and on.

Why in the world would you worry about a firearm worth under 2000?

I agree, when I had Leeper build my " last custom hunting rifle" for me, no expense was spared on the metal or wood, and it has been hunted hard every years since 2010!

I was in the same boat some time ago. I wanted to use an old collectable Winchester 1895 in .405 Win. for a moose hunt.
Since the hunt was from stands only I took the gun in a hard case to & from the stand. The gun was only out of the case
& in my hands while @ the stand. Yes I did shoot a moose on that hunt with my cherished .405.

Do you tend to destroy nice rifles?

That’s me…. Back when I carried an FNC1A1 for Crime Minister Turdeau Senior in the 1970’s, I could walk through the bush confidently. Fast forward 50 years plus and I’m pushing bush (with the doggers and pushers) swearing my head off and falling down/ tripping/rolling my ankles/ slamming my old body over deadfall in WMU 47 of Northern Ontario.

My devoted coyote deer rig is a Model 70 CRF Featherweight Compact (too old to carry large rifles) from Portugal. As soon as I bought that rifle from Clay over at Prophet River in Lloyd, AB; I bought / ordered a new Bell/Carlson SA RH stock. Walnut and me don’t get along.

When I was issued 4L6178, it came with walnut furniture and I never gave it a worry or thought. I just cleaned it and followed it up with some issued gun oil (Wainwright Depot 1977 Battle School).

These days, I buy my own rifles and I sold that Winnie Model 70 Walnut stock the following week after installing the Bell and Carlson SA RH stock from Clay.

Here she is… all ready for coyotes….

That is how they appeared upon arrival from Prophet River in Lloyd, AB.

Now here she is for the coyote fields…..

Yeah, I know/ realize that the Bushy HDMR2 is overkill for the coyotes, but I’m accustomed to good glass …. It’s a passion.

Anyways, buy what works for you and your: budget, game, hunting style, fear factor, LCV (looks cool value) , male ego, ammo source, handloading tendencies… you get my drift.

All the Best!!

Peace Be The Journey!

Now for the glass.
Got it narrowed down to 3
Leupold vx 5 hd 3-15
Leupold vx3 hd 4-14
Swarovski 3-18

Leaning towards the vx5 3-15 with fine duplex

OP - If you can't abide dinging up the factory wood stock it came with change it out for a synthetic to hunt it. ;)

NAA.

$2500 , but that’s not the point.

either put a sock over the wood or use painters tape to protect the wood - however if your taking a shot using a tree branch/trunk you will scuff it up

I don’t use anything to rest the gun on.
If I got to go through that much trouble, I’d just rather not use it.
