Hi all,

I come to you in need. Many moons ago, my grandfather gave me his first rifle, a Winchester 72A .22 as my first rifle. The rifle is a tack driver and has always been reliable. However, earlier today, with nothing else to do, I figured since I had never taken this rifle completely down before, that I should probably do it.

Well long story short, the internet failed me, in the fact that I couldn't find a free version of the original manual. Because of this, (dont laugh) I couldn't figure how to get the rifle apart.

Help? I don't know when this rifle was last apart so it may be stiff. However, as of now I have yet to figure out how to get it apart.

Thanks, any help is appreciated. :welcome:

Ahhh Grasshopper, the gun Lords have prevented you from needlessly frustrating yourself
with the befuddlement of not having the wisdom to attack a harmless creature.
Library maybe?
If it ain't broke, don't frustrate yerself.
Study, study and study somemore before you harm this fine gem......

How far "down" did you wish to take it?

I can give you a schematic (PM me an Email Address) from my old Numrich catalogue. I'll scan and, send. It doesn't have instructions, just an exploded view diagram.

Looks to be just one takedown screw in the stock from this picture. One good tip: Lay out any components your remove in order, on your workbench (my kitchen table...lol) makes re assembly a bit easier.

If you want to seek the information you need you have to ask the gun Lords over on rimfire central. Under the Winchester forum you will find various fanatics that could tell you how to strip it down to the last bolt and things to watch out for that could cause you great headaches.

Well here in lies the problem. I'm not trying to remove every last bolt and roll pin. This was my first rifle as well as my granddads, so I intend on keeping it in the excellent condition that it is in.

That being said, he refinished the stock in the 60's I believe and honestly I don't think that the stock has been removed since. More or less I just want to get the stock off. I tried unscrewing the main take down screw on the bottom of the stock. However, unlike several cooey's that I have in my house, that simply "pop off" there was WAY to much resistance between the barrel and the stock once the screw was turned out.

Also, the screw didn't come out, it simply bottoms out on the threads and remains in the hole. Not threaded into anything, just there, almost like there is a stop keeping it from being removed.

At this point I turned to the internet....

The stock bolt passes through an escutcheon so, it won't drop out freely from the stock. You shouldn't have to remove it entirely. As far as the schematic goes, that's all it shows holding your rifle to the stock.

Possible a couple of taps with block 'o' hardwood would convince the barreled action to wiggle a bit. Don't bash stuff up, just a rap or two might help.

PM me your email and, I'll scan and, send the picture I have.
