Just purchased a winchester 94 RCMP 100th aniversary edition from a fellow gunnut. The rifle came with the original box and packaging. He claims the rifle has never been shot, but i have my doubts. Did winchester package these rifles with a zip tie holding the lever to the stock to keep it from moving like he claims, or did someone put that zip tie on after (dont know if they even had zip ties in 1973) ? also (unsure of terminology so please bare with me) the inside of the gold plated reciever where the shells are fed into looks like the gold is flaked off possible from loading shells, and the end of that black peice that you push in to the reciver to load shells looks like its worn on the end from loading shells. Could this rifle have been fired in the factor? Am I just paranoid? Will try to get pics up later. Other than this the rifle looks 100% new. The inside of the barrel doesnt look like its seen any bullets. Its a 2 digit serial number RCMP not MP edition. Wondering approx value, fired and unfired.

My experience is that zip ties weren't available in 1973. Any commemoratives, particularly Winchesters I've come across have never had any zip ties on them - with one exception. Some gun shows require any firearms brought in to be checked that they are empty and then zip tied.

As for approximate value, I'd defer to those with more experience in this area.

I had two RCMP commemorative. They do not come with a zip, or any other kind of tie, to prevent the action from being opened. Neither do they come with any sign of flaking or waring, where cartridges would be fed into them.
If it was me, I would be hopping mad at that "never fired bit."

I have a 44.40 winchester model 94 (little big horn centennial)that has some of the gold plating coming off just below the spring cover (where you insert the bullet) The rifle is nib never been fired. So gutinater it is possible the rifle could still be new.

Absolutely no zip ties were installed on those.

If someone has a zip tie on, it is to prevent people from working the lever and thus, creating wear on a new gun.

Check the firing pin. Tell tale sign of a rifle that has been fired. And scoring on the boltface.

Flaking and stuff like that happens with those. I have a slew of them and some have the flaking but have never been fired.

and no, they werent test fired in the factory. There are companies like Tikka Sako Weatherby Golden Eagle etc that do test the barrel at the factory. Winchester Commemoratives were not tested.

I had a similar experience buying a new unfired gun off the EE. It happened to be a winchester commemorative too. I was never able to resolve the issue with the seller, ended up selling it as a shooter at a loss. Most people here are honest but there are a few guys on here that are a bit shady. My advice to you would be to talk to the seller and try to negotiate something, otherwise leaving the appropriate feedback is your only other option.

Im gonna cut the zip tie when i get home and have a look at the bolt and see if theres any carbon residue or evidence that it has been shot. It seems like a few of you also have this flaking on guns that havent been shot, but the seller swore that the zip tie came with the gun when it was new and this is obviously untrue. Is this gun worthless as a collectible if its been shot?

Your zip tie was installed by someone else, not Winchester.

Your gun, if fired, is just a shooter and the collector value is gone. Not worthless, but it has lost its top collector value. It wont be worth more than a new Win 94 (of course depending on the model ie: John Wayne, Calgary Stampede, Alberta/Sask Diamond)

There were no zip ties on the lever, action or anywhere else on the gun when they were in the boxes. If it was new in box, as it had come from the store it would not have had any plastic ties on it.

As for the gold flaking off, given the zip tie situation, I would assume its probably been handled and that is why some of the flaking came off. The flaking can come off on its own due to age and temperature fluctuations etc., however, if it had done so in the box, there should be some evidence of that. I would demand a refund if you assumed you were buying it as a "New in Box" item. New in box means, just that. Unfired, no handling marks, in its original unaltered packaging, as if you were buying it new in '73/'74.

I sold a used one along with the 1973 Winchester Canada catalogue. Beautiful rifle, the nicest Canadian besides the centennial set.

From what I recall, the US prices are roughly $700 + for the RCMP serialed ones and $1000 + for the MP's (prices might be slightly lower in Canada as the demand for Winchester collectible rifles is not as high as it is south of the border)...

hsld.
