Howdy I am looking forsome winchester 94 experts. I recently aquired my first win 94 in 32 win special from 1947 :D only downside is somone cut the mag tube down to look more like a model 64.. Anyways when this was done it was improperly done and the tube mag is touching the barrel and the gun seems to shoot very high and i suspect this is cause ? At 25 yards rested the gun shoots 12" high roughly... I tried removing the screw at the end to put a spring or washer in but it seems even when removed that the barrel band that was installed was done too tight I cant even remove the screw and dont want to damage it. My biggest concern is the consistantcy, Will this shoot in the same spot if i learn where it shoots or will it be random ? My second question... Is it possible to restore the mag tube to original length ? I am unsure if they can be removed and swapped. Thank you all for reading and your time

Gotcha, Only have 1 brand of ammo I tried in it. Aslong as i know It wont be horrible inaccurate due to that ill keep it and see about working on it if possible. I even had an experienced shooter try it out himself while at the range with the same results so I know its not an issue of myself but rather the gun or ammo or a combo, just trying to figure it out and when i compared another winchester 94 side by side the only difference is the tube mag is shorter and its pressed up against the barrel tightly. compared to the original which has space all the way to the end

I seriously doubt your magazine tube has anything to do with it... A higher front sight is required if you can't lower the rear sight anymore.

Lots of 'smiths' have a problem with the band screws... leave it alone..

I will see if I can get a higher front sight thank you.

Only reason I have an issue with the band screws is because Work was done on this gun and not sure if it was a qualified gunsmith which is why i was wondering if somone had messed it up in the first place, but I will just see about a new sight at a local gunshow upcomming thank you

Just shoot a couple five shot groups. Use the exact same aiming point for every shot. That will answer your concern about "consistency". If you are getting 1 1/2" to 2" groups at 50 yards or so (albeit 12" high of aiming point), then you are facing an adjustment to the sights. If you are blowing out 5" or 6" groups at that range, then there might be something else afoot. You need to be totally honest with yourself - how well / how small of groups can you shoot with iron sights? If you and that rifle are there, but 12" high, then spend money to mess with the sights. If you can regularly shoot 1 1/2" groups with an iron sighted Cooey .22 at 50 yards, then you should be able to trust your groups with a 30/30. Another thing I have found - two piece stocks, like a Ruger #1 or a Winchester 94 - often deliver better groups for me when I have the front sandbag under the front of the receiver, not under the forearm, or else when I use the front sandbag to steady the back of my hand while holding the forearm - not making a "hand" sandwich, if you follow what I mean.

Maybe the back sight is wrong, a picture of the gun if you could post it would help, you can get new tubes, I had a couple for the carbines, but all out now.
Also think, maybe when some one messing with the tube, could have changed , or messed the front sight also??

So after changing the front sights I put a few rounds through and it seems to group ok offhand, Next time I have 2 different types of ammo I will compare and see if one's tighter grouping or if its all over, but the main issue seemed to be resolved going from the lowest front sight to the highest I could find and It almost being perfect height

At a guess the tube was cut either to reduce weight/balance or it got a big giant dent in it preventing proper feeding - either way, 'it's cut now' .... if the remaining tube itself is bent that can certainly cause a "real tight" barrel band. If you do get the band off it may be bent as well (for some reason these barrel bands seem to get 'squished' a lot) or the fore end may have been replaced & not properly fitted, has swollen, warped, any number of things.

So you can:
- try to straighten the mag tube (good luck)
- replace the mag tube (you will also need a hanger for it)
- if the band is bent ~ bend it back or buy a new one
- if the forend is poorly fitted, you can most likely solve that with sandpaper ;)

If it's new parts you need, I usually wind up here http://homesteadparts.com when no one on CGN is willing to give up their stash ;)

FWIW - that barrel band screw being real tight is odd, usually they are stripped and real loose. - there should be a notch filed in the mag tube (and barrel) to allow the screw to clear, I would guess that is not there and the screw is binding... though then the mag tube shouldn't be able to touch the barrel..... so that's a bit of a head scratcher.

though it sounds like you have the gun dialed in now, so you may just want to leave well enough alone ;)
