I'm looking for some feedback on a 1970 or 1971 Winchester 94 (.3030) that a coworker inherited. It was used a few times in the late 70's/early 80's around the farm and then put in the closet until now. It had a pretty clean bore but has a lot of wear on the receiver and stock (see pics below).

He hasn't decided if he wants to sell it, but if he does, what should I offer him that would be fair? I have no experience with these rifles and want to be reasonable.

Will it diminish the value if he strips and refinishes the wood?

Thanks

In that condition about $250... $300 if you are feeling generous.

There isn't much value to diminish if he refinishes the wood. There were over 7,000,000 of that model rifle made and that one isn't a particularly nice example.

I think $200 is reasonable, $225 is fair and $250 would be generous.

I wouldn't offer more than $200. But I would not offer in the first place not unless you're desperate or trying to help a buddy out. There are better guns out there for not much more.

I don't like the wear pattern on the receiver or how the wood has deteriorated for such a young gun.

My brother has a 1972 vintage that he bought new, and the wood looked worse than that after only a few years. You should be aware that the wood of this era is not real walnut... birch I believe, stained to look like walnut, and if you refinish it, it comes out looking very pale. I've heard it described as blonde.

It should be a very good rifle if you want a shooter and not a collectors piece.

My brother in-law picked one up for $200 in better shape of off his boss

A sale like this, "bought from his boss," has no bearing on the value of similar Winchester rifles, because it is not an "arms length sale," meaning a sale negotiated between strangers.

Why are you guys low-balling this 94? According to the RCMP this is a super rare gun......

Seriously, 200-250$ for post-64 in that shape.

I saw a dead porky on the side of the 103 that was in better condition than that rifle. I'd offer the same for it as I would for the porky.

I was factoring in a bottle of Tru-Oil and the beauty of not caring how it bounces around behind the truck seat... that's gotta be worth something???

Wow, thanks for all the insight guys. I'm going to offer $100 if he throws in a dead porky, as long as we both agree in advance I mean porcupine.
