Winchester Balistic SilverTips 30-06 180g

Fired the 30-06, 180s on paper only. Never found great accuracy in my rifle. Traded the rifle before I could ever take it on a hunt so no observed performance on game.

I have used the Ballistic Silvertips in a 270. Rather explosive and massive damage. Baseball sized exit hole after hitting a rib. Found crazy amounts of damage resulting in a fair bit of waste. I went back to my Blue Box Federals, tighter groups and animals were just as dead without the excess waste. My father tried the same in his 270 and found similar massive damage.
 
It has a picture of a deer on the box....won't work...Find bullets that have a picture of a moose and your good to go.:p

they are ####house for Sambar deer........ especially within 150m, ive found they blew shallow wounds as opposed to penetrating enough.

tracked a solid hit Sambar stag that my cousin shot from 200m, beside me, on a unalarmed deer and it jumped and I expected it to be just no further than 50 m away when it turned into 6 hours and a good blood trail turn to specks until it stopped.

I personally don't use them an would rather someone used a Super X or a Corelokt SP of the same weight....
that's just me though, moose might not be as mentally tough as a Sambar.. like red deer, they may lay down easily

These are the combined tech Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded for/by Winchester I believe.

I load and shoot the Nosler version. And yes they are a (newer) design compared to the old cup/core bullets and they were designed specifically for thin skinned game.

Now moose are not all that hard to kill and I'm sure they would work but they would not be my first choice or even my 4th/5th choice (and as I stated, I shoot the Nosler version of these).

Partition style - Nosler Partition or Swift A-Frames would be 1 and 2 on my list (and I do hunt moose and only shoot either of those).

If I was to stray from the above, then I would look next to the tougher bonded bullets - Nosler Accubonds, Swift Siroccos, Hornady Interbond etc

If you are into the mono's the Barnes TTSX, Hornady GMX etc

Then I would even go with old cup/core style - Rem Core-Lokt, Speer Grand Slams, Hornady Interlock "before" I would go with one of the various "ballistic tips" which were really "engineered" for deer.
 
I use 168 grain .308 BST exclusively for deer bear and moose. Bang-flops are my experience, but I'm well aware of Lady Luck.

As for penetration, I had a pesky Maple Tree get in the way of a running deer a few years back. 8 1/2 inch diameter, went clean through. Damned if I can figure out how to post the video of it :-/
 
old silver tip ammo I think got too expensive to produce so they now use a cheaper bullet the power point. I still have about ten boxes put away. shoots well too. the ballistic silver tip is a coated noz ballistic tip. would work well at distance but would be a little tender up close. not my choice for moose. acubond, scirroco or partition would be better. that said the bt would probably be fine for a broad side lung shot.
 
I've found that the BST is too thin skinned for proper penetration as it tends to open to quickly IMO using it on moose/elk would likely disappoint you and leave you with either a lot of bloodshot meat and/or a good aerobic exercise tracking what you shot. The Ballistic Tip is a different story having a stronger jacket.
 
Shot a ten point, 215 lb buck at about 70 yards a few years ago with it. I was pretty confused when i dressed it, a massive amount of damage on the side where the bullet entered and just a small hole for an exit, it appeared the as though the bullet struck a rib and almost exploded, the core carried through and exited. Definitely put him down, but what a hell of a mess to deal with.

I have 16 boxes of the old silver tips stashed, they were always the go to, saw them on clear out at Walmart and bought all they had in stock.
 
The Ballistic Silver Tip is NOT a good choice for thick heavy skinned game (moose). They will not penetrate deep, fragment and do a lot of meat damage. Winchester's Fail Safe or the now discontinued Partition Gold are far better choices.
 
Have a look at the 30 cal bullet test stickied at the top of the hunting rifle forum. The current production 180gr ballistic tip is in no way a fragile bullet.

I second what Russ says and buy the one with the Moose on the box.
But, if it is all you got and your close enough to see the whites of his eyes then by all means...shoot and shoot again !

Not sure if my old 196gr Norma dual cores will work for moose or elk....There was NO picture on the box.:runaway:
BTW....I don't read labels,directions, or maps.....I just look at the pictures
