Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in .358 Norma Magnum

Looks good! I too like the idea of an older classic cartridge in a new stainless platform and have a 9x57 build using a .358 dia barrel in the works. I'm starting out with a Featherweight Stainless though and won't be changing the stock.

Of the .35's, the only on that makes sense is the Whelen.

The Norma Mag is a joke. Get a .375....

Clarke say the 358NM is a joke. I tend to disagree, esp with the better bullets we now have.

A lot of folks are shooting lighter TSX/TTSX in their 375s, so what's the diff.

Nice rifle BTW.

My late Brother killed a lot of game with a 358 Norma and liked it very much so I also totally disagree with Clarke.... and a lot of other stuff he comes out with....

I purchased my first from Ted, the Husqvarna pictured in an earlier post. In the deal with it, I also picked up an old box of Hornady 275gr RN that I'll have to save for way up North Moose hunt.

Well, after waiting 8 months for my Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in. 338 Win Mag to come in, I decided to ship it out and have it rebored and re chambered to the awesome .358 Norma Magnum. It was brand new and unfired. I'm guessing it will probably be another 8 months to a year before I get it back but it should be a great moose / giant bear hammer. I also bought a Boyd's laminate Prairie Hunter in the Royal Jacaranda color and it's absolutely gorgeous. I had to share my excitement with you CGNERS. Nobody around here gives a hoot, lol.

You have mentioned that you have some 250 gr Hornadys loaded up to start with. What bullets are you planning on trying? The Norma can push big bullets fast enough that some don't hold together very well. Even the Norma bullet on factory ammo is quite soft. I built my first 358 almost 40 years ago and they are a killer on big game if the bullet holds together. I've found the Nosler Partition, Swift A-frame and the Barnes TSX will hold together.

There's another possible option for consideration. I've recently acquired some Woodleigh 310gr Weldcore RN SN, just to try out.

Johnn A 1 in 12 in twist would stabalize the 310 gr bullets. I doubt the 1 in 16 would so the 1 -14 is somewhere in the middle. Being a round nose it should not be overly long so it might be OK in a 1-14 twist.

Clarke is harmless .... He's just trolling away with his NEW KING and having a bit of fun.

Kinda like the old "Fudd vs Mall Ninja" thing.
