Winchester Model 71 ####

Got back from the Syracuse show today and saw some beautiful 71 deluxes. Never seen so many nice ones in one spot. Never see a carbine though; like hens teeth.
I also was lucky enough to find a few beauty bolt peeps. Reproductions but you cannot tell the difference. I could not tell when I saw them and they were sitting with one that was original. They are really excellent. I am keeping one, have sold one already, leaving me with two others if anyone is in need.

Sounds like a great road trip Matt, can you post a pic of the repro peep please ? A member of our club just got back from Florida. Nice 71s at the shows there too he said. They're out there ! There's a short tang on the EE right now.

According to the gentleman I bought them from, the only difference between this and the original is that this one is milled slightly different on the underneath, enabling it to fit both the Models 71 and 65. They are very nice sights. I should see if he has more because you just can't find them up here, and they are great for hunting. I love mine. I can consistently put shots into an area the size of a loonie at 50 and 100 yards with my peep. Can't say the same with open sights.

Thanks, contaucreek.........been here a long time, not much of a poster. But I love the '71's.
No parts changed...........I reshaped the grip with rasp, file, and sandpaper, and the lower tang with careful filing and wet sandpaper for the right contour, and then re-blue.

The lever was heated with a propane torch and slowly bent straight with large wooden dowels in the ends to maintain the round radius. Sounds crazy but worked like a charm.

I know that some people frown at modifications to good guns, with good reason, but as I get older I want things a certain way, and it really doesn't look Bubba'd. It looks like a Winchester '86 Extra lite from 1905.

I reload .348 using Hornady 200 gr. jacketed bullets over 45 gr. Reloder 7 with a Lee Factory Crimp die.

Great load and rifle for moose and black bear. Gerry
 
Those are really nice 71 guys. Never get tired of seeing new pics of these rifles. BTW, if anyone needs a bolt peep to put on their deluxe, I just put my last one in the optics exchange. Really nice sights and very hard to find up here.

Ooooo! That must have been pretty neat. I can't remember ever going to a Gun Show other than the ones in Sudbury or North Bay. They must be pretty impressive down there?

This is the 1st 71 I bought and it has been refinished...:(

This is the 2nd 71 (Old Grizz) I bought several years later. There is only 105 rifles between the two of them and they were both built in 1947. It is my saddle gun and I used it lots while guiding in the NWT
It is a deluxe and it's missing the bolt peep. Hoping Matt can help me out on that! I was at a Bud Haines auction in Red Deer one time and they had a 71 with the bolt peep there. By the time the rifle came up some SOB had swiped the peep off of it.

I couldn't find a scabbard that fit so I built my own with everything I wanted. Works great!

This is the bullet I have used the most. The used one went through both sholders of a Grizzly at 18 paces and weighs 145 grains. It was just under the skin.
