Winchester Model 71 ####

It was a Browning so don't freak out! 348 Ackley, 23" Pac-Nor match, Wenig birch laminate bedded stocks, 200 grain hornadys at 2650 fps, heavy and really loud!

I just saw a couple boxes of new 348 winchester 200 gr Silvertips in a hardware store. The owner said he would cut me a deal on them for $60/box! My god. I am glad my family has a large collection of brass for 348. Lets hope with the Shot Show special coming out some affordable stuff is for sale.

That's better than what I paid from Omineca, about two years back. With components I've picked up at local gun shows, brass and a good variety of bullets, I should be good to go for quite a while now.

Spent the last couple of days out chasing grizz. Picked up this track at about 3600 feet. Followed him for abit, and from what I could gather by his direction of travel was that he was headed over top of the mountain and toward some south facing slopes. Looks like he was traveling in the dark while the snow was hard packed as well, as it was quite soft during the day.

Had a look at my GPS and noticed a couple trails cutting in around the mountain, so decided to try the top one to see if I could cut his track coming over the top. I picked up this nice shed but couldn't cut his track but was sure he had passed through.

Next day, decided to try the second trail which was lower but swung around the mountain
and right into the south facing slopes which I figured he was headed for. After hiking through the snow for a few miles, the trail made its way around the ridge and led right into some nice grassy slopes but with limited visibility due to the thick brush. At this point the thick alder made it tough going but I pushed through for a couple hundred yards
till I could not go any further. I looked down and noticed that a grizz had just passed
a few minutes earlier and no doubt he was very aware of my presence.

I stood still and listened for a few minutes, all was quiet but looking down the hill about
20 yards away and I noticed a kill site so went down for a closer look.

I then noticed what appears to be a bear den a few yards further away and was about
to go investigate when the grizz lets out a roar so loud and close that no word of a lie
almost made my knees buckle. I*m in alder so thick that it was difficult to even swing my rifle and decided this wasn't the time or place to tangle with a grizz and started
backing out. After backing up a couple hundred yards I broke into more open ground
and waited but it was the last I heard of him and was sure of one thing, I wasn't
going back in to dig him out. So there's abit of a story along with some more 71 ####.

Now that's hunting! Cool, cool story.

I carry my camera in a flip top pocket on the Crewcab so it's very little effort to slide out and snap a picture. I was quite aware of laying the rifle down at that time wasn't a smart move or for that matter even taking pictures of the track but who would believe my story with out evidence :)

Man, this thread is a ghost from the past. Glad you resurrected it Dave. Great looking rifle. Now I see why you were looking for brass:) Had a chance to see how she works yet?

Here is a photo I took of my Winchester Model 71 Deluxe this morning. I think I posted pics of it long ago, but here it is with a few extras. The rifle is one of the early ones with a long tang, a 1936 gun. The rifle is super accurate, I can do really well with it with the bolt peep. Still waiting for ol' Mr. Moose to step out in front of it.

Dude, does your wife know you have gun oil on the bed? :)

Great rifle BTW

Lol. It's not actually the bed, I set this up on the dining room table. But, it is one of her favorite blankets. But no, she does not know. If she did, you would probably not be hearing from me right now!
