I appreciate the offer, however if you saw the rifle I'm sure you would not want to drill any holes in it.

I have a Mod 71 Deluxe(ser.370xx)It has a recoil pad marked Pachmayer similar to John Peterson"s rifle.Is this the proper recoil pad?

On mine, ser. #374xx, the recoil pad is an original and marked Winchester. By some of the model 71 info I have available, it was a factory option and available on some.

So where mine is a Pachmayer and not marked Winchester it was likely non factory.
My 71 deluxe has an original metal butt plate.

The carbine version of the 71 is the nicest handy powerful rifle I own. I like it so much I have 2. One to shoot the snot out of, and one to fondle. If someone can direct me to info on posting pics off a Mac I'll add some pics to drool over. The info need to be clear enough for an old guy to handle.

I don't know how I missed this thread in the past? Oh well better late than never. I'll play along.
I have a Model 71 standard grade handed down to me by my Grandfather. He purchased it new in '58 or '59? He ordered a deluxe model but when the rifle arrived it was a standard grade. The dealer told him the distributor sent it with a note saying there weren't any deluxe grades left and that the 71's production had been discontinued. My Grandfather said he was so disgusted as he had paid up front that he took the rifle home, put it in the closet and there it sat for two years before he finally took it out to try it. He said he realized what a waste it had been to leave it home those two moose seasons, lol. He drilled and tapped it fir a side mount scope and attached a 4x Weaver to it. There is a pic if I can find it to post of him with a really nice bull he took in '61 with the rifle in the antlers.
He quit moose hunting in '71 and took a dozen moose with the rifle, that he could remember before packing in the moose hunting. He figured he took another dozen or so Whitetail with it and about double that number of Vancouver Island Blacktail before retiring from hunting altogether around 1989 or 1990? He sent me the rifle in 2002 as he said he probably would not hunt any longer, he was 81 by then.
For the most part it rarely sees the light of day as I am not an avid big game hunter but in '09 I used the rifle to take my first and only Whitetail to date. A small 6 point Ontario buck which I took from one of Deerdrs tree stands. I would love to take a nice Mulie with it some day and of course a Moose and an Elk would be a bonus as well.
As I said earlier my Grandfather scoped the rifle and yes I have heard more times than you can imagine about how that devalued the rifle but my Grandfather was not a gun collector, he was a hunter who had the same 5 or 6 guns his entire life and used them expressly for hunting. He originally put a fixed 4X Weaver on the rifle and in '81 swapped it out for a Bushnell Scopechief VI fixed 4X. It wore that scope when I took my Whitetail in '09 but last fall I swapped it out for a Leupold Vari-X1 3-9x40 which I have yet to even sight in. I'll get it ready for this season.

And yes I have some ammo for it, all factory as I do not reload. For the little I use the rifle this will last until I retire from hunting. I am always on the hunt for more though as some day one of my sister's three boys will inherit the rifle. I already gave the oldest the Model 64 30 WCF carbine my Grandfather left to me that he had inherited from his father.
My one and only Whitetail to date. This one succumbed to the Model 71 348 with a single round, a 200gr silvertip @ 338 metres.

Does any mind if I bring this thread back to life?
Of my last 3 acquisitions, 2 were Model 71s. Up front we have the genuine article with a Browning carbine in behind.
I'm still waiting for my holy grail, Winchester Carbine Deluxe with bolt peep and original sling come up for sale.

That's okay, though...I just picked up an original Carbine Deluxe complete with bolt peep a few days ago. I'll post pics shortly...it's in my drill press currently being drilled and tapped for a pic rail and a red dot.

Step away from the drill press. Go and pour yourself a drink and think about what you are about to do. Once you are done your drink, or two, please PM me. I'll send over a truck to pickup the rifle, drill press and whatever ungodly components you thought your were going to bolt on.
Whatever you have into the rifle, I will gladly reimburse you along with a healthy bonus. I will then drive you to one of those so called gun shops where everything is black and plastic. You can pick out any one of those "rifles" and I'll buy it for you. We can even bolt or hot glue gun on any gizmos you want, but please, please do not harm a beautiful work of art like a vintage Model 71.

Too late, too late...the section of pic rail is in place on top of the barrel. One of the holes went a bit too deep and poked through into the bore, but I sealed around the screw with epoxy so I think it'll be fine. The divot that the drill took out of the bottom of the bore when it broke through is hardly noticeable.
That stupid aperture sight was interfering with the red dot...wouldn't "co-witness", don'tcha know...so I had to remove it. The old screws were pretty much frozen in place, but the Dremel made short work of that little sucker.
Best of all, the AR-style pistol grip screwed right on, no machining required. All I need now is a couple cans of Krylon and I'm off to the races!

Well, in that case before you break out the Krylon, 71's have always been a bit on the heavy side. If you take a grinder, you can re-profile the barrel and wood. Shave off a pound or 2 and then Krylon your heart out.
All I ask is you save all the shavings and send it over so I can have a proper ceremony, say a few words, and lay it to rest.

A member on here PM'd and asked if I would post some pics of the Remington .348 ammo I have for my 71 so that he and others could see what Remington .348 looked like in comparison to Winchester. So here it is..... look at the price sticker on the end of the box. $17.90 and at Canadian Tire in New Sudbury. My Grandparents left there in 1980 so these rounds at least date that far back! Been a long time since I heard that term, New Sudbury. Every time I went to visit my Grandparents as a kid it seemed like I was in that store with my Grandfather, usually buying a can of Bulldog brand pellets to take to the cottage to shoot Gramp's air rifle or Gramp was picking up Lake Trout fishing gear. Good times.
