Winchester Model 94 & 92 vs Savage 99?

I doubt you'd go wrong with any of them. I have all 3 and like them all.

I favor Winchesters over anything else but have a soft spot for the Savage 99 a rifle advanced for it's time. The two I have are pre-one million; a 1956 F/W in 308 and a 1919 in 250-3000 T/D.

If you do choose to buy a M99, the pre-one million ones are the best. They're built before 1960; rotory brass magazine spool, left side cartridge counter and safety on the lever.

The only repair I had to do on the 308 F/W was to install a new extractor blade on the bolt when I bought the gun close to 30 years ago and has run fine ever since. My Son claimed it and has used since he started hunting some 19 years ago. He likes my Winchester bolt guns but prefers the 99.
 
I'd say go with the rifle that feels the best to you or that you like the best. I can't imagine the choice of cartridges out of the ones you listed ever even making a difference in your uses.
 
I have a Savage 99 30-30 made in 1907 and a model 94 made in the late 40s.
Both guns go bang when they are supposed to and hit what i am aiming at.
100 yards and in is where i shoot them most.
Both rifles have taken moose and bear with no issue.
Pick the one you like the most and have fun.
Opinions are like ass holes. Everybody has one. Me includedšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚.

Savage model 99 is a riflemanā€™s rifle . Effortlessly stronger than the others mentioned, striker fired & no exposed hammer means a closed chamber from dirt. The bolt cams up on closing against a solid block for exceptional strength and repeatability. Donā€™t like the look - great ,easier to get mine in 99c / .308.
Function over form and in function they are a thing of beauty.

Powerful advice, very poignant.

I was going to suggest buying things you hate that feel terrible but this has given me a lot to think about.

Nothing handles like a 92, the chambering selection is the real limiting factor but for your needs 44 mag or 357 seems more than suitable.

I agree that savage 99's are not exactly beautiful (though there are much, much uglier) but I have made the mistake of shooting and hunting with one and they are very nice in all other respects. It was a late model 308 but the accuracy, trigger pull and handling genuinely blew my mind a little.

A lever gun with a pistol grip and no external hammer just seems wrong somehow though.
 
Man. so many good thoughts and opinions here.

Did no small amount of thinking, and long story short I kept the money from my henry X sale, and traded my cva 50 cal muzzle loader and canuck sentry pump for a 1907 production model 94 winchester in 30-30 with a half octagonal barrel, flat marbles sight, full mag tube and crescent buttplate. i'll post some pictures at some point here. 3030 didn't have the plinking rounds I was hoping for but figured I would just buy cheap speer rounds, keep reloading and buy bulk powder once every year or two. still cheaper than factory ammo and I already have all the reloading stuff for 3030.

One thing I did notice is that when I popped off some spare rounds I thought it was shooting crazy high, like 4-6 feet high at 100 yards so i'll have to get some more ammo to try and get that figured out.
