Winchester Super X-1 trap

As bad as some say the old buffers were they were not that bad. 6 guns 4000 rounds each in 13 1/2 hours pretty impressive IMO
Cheers

They are only bad after a third of a century of drying out and now neoprene has replaced them. The SX1 is a great gun. You don’t see auto’s built with solid block steel machined receivers and the quality of wood that was used back then nowadays.

You got that right.

- the recoil spring should measure 30" new and replace at 27".
- stay with standard spring and not the HD spring
- tune up kits are available at Wrights: http://www.wrightsgunsmiths.com/parts.htm

3macs1, thank you for posting the article and photo. I found it very interesting. Those averages over that many targets should stand pretty much forever I would think !!!
I did not see a date in the article......do you know the year?

How many rounds you figure through yours with that neoprene replacement?

I only had about 1 box through my main one after updating it with a complete Wrights tune up kit before making the mistake of selling all three of mine. It had worked flawlessly until the original buffer broke in 2015. Had my eye on something else and wish I’d never sold them now. I had one I used, a field model with a 26” WS1 barrel converted to Briley thin wall titanium chokes and a second untouched 26”WS1 barrel, two original trap models, one with with a 30” F Trap stamped barrel (unfired) and a trap model that was NIB with with a 30” Imp Mod Trap stamped barrel. Plus I had a host of odds and ends. A new never used receiver, a couple Wrights kits with stainless mag tubes, extra neoprene buffers etc. I sold it all and have regretted it ever since.

Hi
The year was 1976 according to winchester

1976. A team of six trapshooters uses six Winchester Super X Model 1s to set a new world’s one-day record of 24,000 thrown targets, crushing the old mark by 9,000 targets.

Agree . Rounds had nothing to do with it for the most part. Most I have changed out just to be safe not that they looked bad. Plus many originals had a couple 100K on them
Cheers

Interesting stuff.

We had them go in 50 ish shots with hunting loads.

That’s incredible!

How many rounds you fired in your lifetime?

No idea, shot rifle, shotgun and handgun at one time and started reloading in the 60's. Now only the shotgun
There was a time I was reloading 5000 28ga and 3000 410 alone a year . When we were all shooting at home three guys lead was being bought by the ton and powder six 12 pounders of 700X for 12ga
I have probably 30-40,000 hulls stashed even now so a lot. Still have 5 or 6 lockers full of reloads ready to go in all gauges
Cheers

From new? They haven’t been made since 1978 so any you come across now if they have the original buffer will have dried out from aging so it’s highly recommended they be replaced prior to use. Even the two unfired traps I owned I changed out in case I decided to use them.
