Winchester SX4 waterfowl

Yes, the SX-3 is definitely the superior offering. At the time the SX-4 was substantially cheaper and the SX-3 was out of my price range. Rather misleading as you would expect the SX-4 to be the upgraded version, but it's definitely not. From looking at spare parts for the SX-4, it's much closer in design to the Maxus than the SX-3.

I still shoot a first year production sx1 plain bbl field gun factory mod choke bought on clearance at sears 119.00 . 1974 it’s a little heavy by today’s standards but works great also have.a spare imp cyl bbl

Nothing wrong with that :)
Only two things wrong with the superx1
Winchester didnot make it in 3" :( and only made two in 20ga :(

Cheers

Find an SX-3 while you can. I have SX-3s in 12 and 20 gauge 3" 28inch barrel versions. They are fine guns. I also have a Benelli SBEII and a Remington VersaMax Synthetic if I ever wanted to shoot 3.5inch shells (very doubtful). I recently acquired Weatherby Element guns in 12 and 20 Gauge 3" 26 inch barrels as upland guns. They are inertia operating guns like the Benelli. I really like them and they are beautiful firearms.

Back on point....For what you are asking....You won't go wrong with an SX-3 in 3".

Thank you for the answers.

I am asking prices on the new SX4 models right now. I have been watching videos and it seems like 3 1/2 can handle everything so I think I will go for it. I did not read to many concerns about using 3" on a 3 1/2 shotgun and having the possibility of the 3 1/2 is a plus.

I am not sure about 26" or 28" barrel length...I would like to use it for ducks, geese , rabbits , grouse... and self defense for grizzly bears. It is going to be an all in one shotgun.

Take an SX-3 and an SX-4 and a Maxus apart for cleaning, and it becomes obvious that the SX-4 is much closer in design to the SX-3.

How many parts have you confirmed to be interchangeable between the SX-3 and SX-4? Between the SX-4 and Maxus Silver?

For myself, I confirmed the SX-4 and Maxus share the same charging handle, stock shims and stocks in general. The SX-4 didn't come with shims and I learned the hard way the SX-3 ones don't fit. I have also confirmed the SX-3 charging handle and stock shims won't fit the SX-4. The SX-3 charging handle was thicker and shorter and the SX-3 stock was also thicker where the shims went. SX-4 and Maxus also share the same aftermarket magazine extensions, but those probably fit on the SX-3 too.

There was a difference between the SX-4 charging handle and Maxus in where the spring loaded ball went. I had to slightly modify the Maxus handle so it clicked in properly but they shared the same profile and dimensions. The SX-3 handle wasn't the same profile and wouldn't go in at all.

Take off the foreend, and look at the gas piston, and the other internals .

The part number is the same for the SX-3 and SX-4 gas pistons some other parts look the same but I didn't look up the part numbers.

The Maxus gas piston and internals are very different from the SX-3 and the SX-4.

That's great to know. The SX-4 also shares many parts with the Maxus Silver as my previous post indicated. But not the gas piston as you pointed out.

My understanding is the SX-3 is a superior design to the SX-4. What's your take on that?

You want the best design of this batch of 3 1/2 get an old browning gold or sx2. Only issue does't like less than 1 oz target loads

Bullet proof and will last a life time if taken care of even better than my sx3 or maxus

I am starting to now understand why I am not seeing sx4 around here nor did I run out and buy one which is rare for me

Seems they are not what the sx3 was which is sad
Cheers

I am missing something here .how do you put a magazine extension on a Maxus . Is there also a forend extension that goes with it .

Not something I would do right now until we see what the liberals plan is for semi shotguns
If they follow NZ a mag extension could cost you your shotgun
Just my take
Cheers

I personally don’t see the need for larger than 3” chamber on a 12ga. It knocks geese, ducks, and Turkey more than effectively.
I’ve shot both the sx4 and sx3 and they have a solid reputation for good reason. Both reliable in the field and rugged. Everyone has a budget and I respect that, BUT take a look at possibly a used beretta al391 or a newer a300. The felt recoil in these gas op guns is considerably less and makes hunting more enjoyable.
The vent ribs on the Winchester are also higher so take getting used to.
The Stoeger m3000 has been getting a lot of buzz but I haven’t shouldered one. Worth a look.

Simple need or not 3 1/2 has a higher resale and much easier to sell just like camo vs any other finish
Not a stroger fan here
