Ok just got a Winchester SXP off the EE, apparently BNIB. Apparently. Went to try it out tonight and had this issue.

When I REALLY rack the pump it fails to function. If the safety is on and I take it off, the gun fires. If I leave the safety off and really rack it, the gun will fire without touching the trigger. Also the safety is incredibly stiff when I do it this way.

If I'm gentle and easy with it it works flawlessly.

Here's the thing, I'm 5'10" 155 pounds. So in all seriousness it should take some abuse from me.

Is this just the nature of the gun? or do I have a serious lemon? All I got from the seller was, "it was fine when I shipped it."

I don't feel comfortable with it, and as of right now thinking of getting rid of it for an older 870 which I know aren't made of porcelain. But I actually have morals and won't pawn this thing off on someone with these issues. It's simply unsafe.

My advice for a gun that you don't think is safe is keep it unloaded and get it to a gunsmith for a proper inspection. A qualified gunsmith will be able to tell you if it is unsafe and for a reasonable fee--much less than an accidental discharge can cost you.

Yeah I'll have a smith check it out, it's one of the few shotguns that fit me right so I'd like to get it 100%. But if it's actually OK and just a characteristic of the SXP. It's gone.

odds are its it NOT ok, and thats not the nature of the beast.... I can hammer the piss outta my 870, and she likes it, screams give me more and never goes off without warning.

I had one and it didn't do that.
If it was NIB, then how does the original owner know
it was fine?
Not NIB as described?
Keep us posted and yes on the not so optimistic trader rating.
"It was fine" just doesn't cut it.
More like, "how would you like to proceed with this issue?"
is what I would expect.
Tell the previous owner to take it back or toss some kibble into
the smith's kibble.
Good luck with it.

I got 2 of these shotguns. One has a few cases of target loads and does NOT do that. The other has about 2-3 boxes of 3 inch steel BB shot and functions perfect as well.

I know this is going to sound rough, but, Give your head a shake! Having a gun fire when you take the safety off is a normal characteristic? Seriously, don't load that gun again until it is checked over by a smith.

My buddy and I beat his to rat s**t and we have NEVER had an accidental discharge or any problems with the safety. great gun I can cycle it faster than any other pump I've tried. IMHO you just got a lemon.

...and what does Winchester say about this? This just plain dangerous. Unless this shotgun has been tampered with, I doubt you will need to pay a penny to have it fixed or changed by them. This is an accident/lawsuit situation waiting to happen.

If by chance they want to play hardball with you, tell them YouTube and the forum you're on is a great venue to demonstrate to others the fine example of Winchester's products.

If it were me, I would either a) take it to a gunsmith, b) send it back to the shipper, or c) send it to Winchester for repair.
Either of a) or c) will be able to tell you if someone messed with the sear and or trigger, which is certainly what it sounds like to me. You should be able to slam it open and closed with no issues. Thats what pumps are for.

I would expect Winchester will fix it for free if it was a factory defect or will fix it for cost maybe if someone messed with it.

If it has been adjusted I would make that comment in the feedback I left for the seller.

You may want to contact the seller and explain this to him and ask him if he wants to refund your money now.......because if this really was NIB it would not do this in my opinion

And as you can see the OP has only one trading rating as of yet and it is negative. And it is negative because he left a negative rating for the seller. The rating system is seriously flawed because most won't leave a negative rating because they know they will be retaliated against by the seller. I have had the experience myself where the goods were not as stated. A couple of sellers made it right, no complaint, but a couple did not. In this case the seller says the buyer blames him for a problem with a gun he never fired. This really isn't the issue. If the seller wanted to maintain a good rating instead of worrying about the money, why not take the gun back, have it looked at and resell. Or offer the buyer to help out in the cost of having it fixed.

The trigger group should come out when you push out a pin or two.

The safety is catching it but since the hammer is following the bolt forward or its releasing when you take the safety off. It sounds like the sear that holds the hammer back is not engaging the trigger.

It could be something as simple as some sort of debris fouling up the works. With a new gun it could be defective parts.

OR it could be that your seller tried to do a trigger job himself and screwed it up. A gunsmith should be able to tell you pretty quickly if you don't know what to look for. If the seller mucked up the trigger and sold you the gun, I would say he has quite a bit of explaining to do.

If you can pull the trigger assembly out easily, you can see for yourself easily enough what I mean. When you push the hammer back, you should be able to see if its catching the trigger. Keep your thumb on the front of the hammer, its usually bad for the trigger group to allow the hammer to fall without hitting something.

The way it should work is to catch on the trigger when you push it back. With your thumb on the hammer you should feel it release as you squeeze the trigger. With the safety on it should not drop. With the safety off it should not drop until the trigger is squeezed.

Thanks for the help guys. I tore it right apart down to nothing, couldn't see any evidence of it tampered with (Also I'm know 'smith, just very mechanically inclined). However, for a "brand new" gun it sure was oiled like someone before me tore it right down. It's with the smith now, I PM'ed the seller the amount the 'smith quoted me and haven't heard back.

Is it proper etiquette on CGN to post the a**holes screen name?
