I see a lot of SXP's come up for sale in the EE and was wondering what the general consensus is on them? I'm not interested in purchasing one but was curious how those with experience with them have found them in terms of handling and reliability when compared with today's other offerings in a pump gun?

EDIT: Oops I should have put this in the hunting and sporting shotguns forum....mods please move this thread to the appropriate forum. Sorry for the blunder....

It's a Winchester 1300 with a simplified manufacturing process, an extended slide release, and a chromed bore. My Defender has been faultless through 500 shells, which I can't say for my 870, and is much faster and harder to short shuck than my Supernova. I also appreciate slightly shorter LOP stock versus other OEM stocks and I haven't replaced it. I think it's the best pump under 500.

I had an sxp and regret selling it. I ended up buying a 1200. I would buy an sxp again. Probably will buy one again. I Probably the only good turkish made shotgun if you ask me

I think winchester is the superior pump shotguns

I’ve had one for around 10 years now. Fantastic shotgun. It’s the most reliable gun I own. Very good build quality, has never failed me once in thousands and thousands of shells. Only been cleaned once as well.

If you’re thinking of picking one up, do it.

I have one for kicking around and lending out for clays. I like it personally- but shoot the O/U 99% of the time. The rotary bolt makes the pump pretty fast- will chuck a shell like a semi if you aren't holding the fore-end very hard. It fits short for me- but I'm a bigger guy with long neck and arms so a bit wonky to fit but have learned to try to adapt. I haven't regretted purchasing it for a second. Not a single issue- a few flats of shells through it over the years. I definitely like it better than the 870's and Mossies I have handled, but that is subjective. I was shooting it for skeet for a bit- hitting doubles with the pump is a lot of fun.

I agree 100%. I had owned a couple of 1300s years ago, stupidly sold them, and bought my SXP Defenders (a regular one and an Xtreme Defender) to fill that void. Nothing wrong with the SXPs, but my personal favorite is still the old 1300 Defender.

I have one, an SXP Defender low round count, extra 28" barrel for clay shooting. Smooth action, lightweight, matte finish and so far, no issues with target loads. Several reviews points to a weak magazine throat, the plastic insert by the magazine tube. Cheap fix, but tricky to remove. Mine is still OK, but only under 200 rds. Another downside, accessories seems to be almost non-available. I was hoping to find a side folding stock, nothing. Magazine extension tube, seems to be hit and miss due to thread pattern differences. Overall, I am keeping mine. Easy to safely conceal inside our dwelling, unloaded but trigger locked of course.

A friend gave me a SXP that needs the magazine throat replaced seems that this piece should not be made of plastic . Ambishooter you say it is tricky to remove , do you know how to do it ?

On a Winchester 1200 the mag tube has to be pressed back into the receiver to release the old and install the new feed mouth(s). Be aware that some of the variations of this Winchester pump had a threaded mag tube vs. pressed. Which ones I am not sure of. A slide hammer helps pull the tube into place. It impacts against the magazine cap. I hunt and own several Winchester models 1200 and I have never seen the feed throats fail in over 40 years of exposure to 1200's 1300's 1500's 2200's or SXP models. But enough say they do so they can.

My hunting partner had one, a Black Shadow basic model. He liked it, and shot it well.
I shot Trap with it several times. I found the fast action, self ejecting, a bit disconcerting after shooting my Model 12.
His was a reliable gun that accepted and ejected any 2 3/4 or 3 inch ammunition.
I think that the SXP offers good value for the low, on sale price.

I like mine too. I've had it for a few years now. I'm not really a shotgun guy so I've only put a few hundred rounds through it, but it works every time and is very fast to cycle. I don't see the need for anything more unless I wanted to go to a semi.

I got an extended mag tube after looking forever. I think it came from tac ord. Not cheap but works very well.

I shot a Winchester 1300 as my only shotgun for several years, passed it on to various family members once I bought a semi auto, and they needed to upgrade from single shots. Over the years, we wore out two sets of action arms. Otherwise, it worked well, slick shooting and fast pointing gun. I killed a truckload of animals with it: Deer, bear, lots of ducks, and so on. The people who borrowed it did the same.

They are perfect for the non-serious hunter who goes out a few times a year. Maybe twice a month. I would not buy one and expect it to last a lifetime of constant use. I do prefer it over all other pumps except maybe the Benelli or the BPS.
