I was very surprised to say the least after I tried some of the winchester usa brand 45gr JHP in my 22-250. I bought them at walmart for about $32 a box of 40 which is the cheapest stuff around here. I bought them mainly for the brass but decided to punch some paper with them. Well they beat some of my handloads! I was getting honest to god .3" groups at 100 yards. I let my dad try some in his rifle and he found the same thing to be true. I'm using a savage and he has a rem 788. I've had decent luck with other factory ammo but for the bargain basement brand to shoot that well, I was just blown away. I don't even know if I should handload for that gun anymore or if I should just buy the cheap stuff:redface:.
 
I have had similar results in my Rem 700 VS. The sad thing is it was only a few years ago they were $20 for a box of 40. Now that they are up there around $0.80/round I think I might start reloading .22-250... that is of course after I use up the stuff I stockpiled when it was cheaper.
 
i got my tightest group out of my savage .223 with white box FMJ and apparently those .22-250 soft points are pretty clean on yotes

That's true for a pile of things - most of them I guess!! Consider what you made an hour back then and what you earn now - it's probably pretty well a linear comparison. Wish I'd kept my UPL stock I sold for a whopping 500% gain at $6!
But you're right - seems to me the USA brand has taken a pretty good price hop very recently. Commodity prices way up maybe???
