I am in the market for a new rifle, I know I want bolt aciotn, and that I want a wood stock. I want a 30-06. I may look to used as well. What I want to know from all of the experts (I am inexperienced at rifles) is what are the pros or cons regarding the following:

Winchester 70

Ruger 77

Remington 700

As I said there are some options on EE as well as a few private sales I know of, what can I expect from each rifle.

You will get all sorts of answers, but for an inexperienced hunter, I'd say get the one that "feels" the best to you. All 3 that you chose are prety good quality. RUger has rings included as a bonus.

yeah I know. I am looking for a difficult answer, but just what are some of the benefits to each or weaknessess.

I like Savages, but it seems that many people have scope mounting issues with these. Any insight here would be good.

The Winchester Model 70 has been around since 1964 The Remington model 700 since 1962 the ruger since 1967 All three are capable of being very accurate, there are many variations in cosmetic configurations to each model it is very much personal preference .

Scope mounting issues? What kinda issues? If the scope is long - one needs extended bases, that's it. If the rifle is for actual hunting and not 'hunter wanna be' - look into weight of the rifle too as well as weather resistance. In this case, synthetic stock may be a plus.
Late (and not only) Savages are very accurate and don't come with high rate of defects unlike some other ones....
Stevens is another good budget rifle.

Take the advice you have already been given. Go to a gun store and look at different rifles. You've got to handle the rifle, to find the answer. The quality of all 3 are good, it's the 'fit' that matters.

Second. Buy either a .308 or .30-06.

Yeah that may be the only issue, I am not too sure.

definitely not a hunter wanna be here, but I do want to go for wood - I have a nice synthetic muzzleloader already.

What are some of the defects of other rifles?

minor issue with this being I am in an isolated area, and will not likely be anywhere near a firearms store until August. By that stage of the year I want to have my rifle scoped and to the range several times.

Regarding Caliber 270 win. may be one to consider good choice of factory loads 100gr. for varmints 130.gr. for deer 140 and 150gr for moose and elk it can do it all.

To be somewhat anal, the Model 70 has actually been around since 1936 (albeit in a couple of different configurations). With that being said the one that fits you and your budget sounds like a great choice.

We all know how long the model 70 has be around but he was speaking of current models in production the pre 64 is a differnt barrel of apples it seems very difficult to keep these forms on track. the Rem 721 + 722 has been around since 1948 and the 725 since 1958 but not relitive to this post.

Ruger tang safety:
Custom 338-06
308 win
257 Roberts
22-250

Yes I love the Ruger tang safety rifles. One advantige to a Ruger is it comes with the scope rings. I offten point new hunters in the direction of the Ruger, as I believe them to be the best bang for the money. I have owned Remington rifles as well as Winchester rifles, but lways seem to replace them with a Ruger tang safty.

You mentioned you know of a couple privet sales. I would suggest trying them for fit and then make up your mind. Be carefull guns can be adicting. Why else do they call this place gunnutz.

Accurate junk.;)

That pretty much sums it up.

They make an acceptable target rifle, but as a hard core hunting rifle things like tin clips, or weak plastic functioning pieces (sooner or later) WILL let you down.

20 years comes and goes very quickly and what little you save today will become tomorrows junk. I have a 20 year old Savage in my gun safe to remind me of this...It still shoots well, but the entire feeding system is screwed.

Ruger, Winchester, Remington, Sako, or Weatherby are all good rifles because of the solid components that go in to them.

Buyers of Tika should pay attention.
